Acclaimed World/Jazz/Experimentalist Juancho Herrera announces the release of his second album Banda, featuring original and innovative compositions inspired by an urban, modern vision of Latin America deeply rooted in traditional sounds evoking those of Africa and the Americas. In addition to long-time collaborators Yayo Serka (Lila Downs) on drums and Ben Zwerin (Nouvelle Vague) on bass, Juancho recruits some of the most innovative and dynamic artists of the New York Latin and Jazz scenes such as Claudia Acuña, Anat Cohen, Jason Lindner, Sofia Rei, Aquiles Baez, Sofia Tosello, Samuel Torres, among others.

The content of Juancho’s latest production was inspired by the nature of conflict within different contexts. From the political to the personal, from the turmoil of the Middle East to the streets of his native Venezuela, Herrera applies his stamp of “South American soul” to convey a deeply rooted conviction that only through dialog, acceptance and inclusion can these challenges be addressed.
Humor, directness, and poetry inform the lyrics and the urbane, blues-infused sound is achieved through the familiarity created by the collaboration with long time partners Yayo Serka (Lila Downs) on drums, Ben Zwerin (Angelique Kidjo) on bass, and Rafi Malkiel on Trombone. In contrast to previous releases by Herrera, “El Mismo Sol”, (produced by Herrera, Serka and Zwerin), has a “band” feel to it. Arranged as a group and recorded with minimal personnel, this new music reflects what the group sounds like in live performances. Strong, direct, soulful, and, sometimes raw, this new collection of songs never departs from the South American realm. Rhythms such as Venezuelan Merengue or Peruvian Festejo coexist with a heavier blues sound invoking a new character within these traditions. With this new release, Juancho Herrera and his band keep on delivering new perspectives into the World Music scene.

While Juancho Herrera is part of a wave of extraordinary Latin American musicians who’ve transformed the New York music scene in recent decades, he’s carved out a singular path with a highly personal synthesis of jazz and South American sounds. With his fourth album Gaviero, the Colombian-born string wizard, singer, composer, arranger and producer delivers a striking concept album that is both a sumptuous sonic journey and a vivid visual feast.
 
In an era when music is consumed disembodied and piecemeal via low-fi digital streams, Herrera has created a countercultural multimedia experience that combines a beloved Latin American literary source, a keen-eyed photographer/designer, and a supremely gifted international cast of musical explorers. Inspired by Maqroll El Gaviero, a beloved nautical character whose picaresque adventures turned Colombian diplomat and poet Álvaro Mutis into a Latin American literary icon, Gaviero is the work of an artist eagerly investigating breathtaking new sonic territory.

With Gaviero, his fourth album, Herrera has once again set out for new territory, bringing together players, images, and music to create something evocative of realms glanced at but not seen, whispered about but not heard.
