For the last who knows how many years I have recorded a song for my friend Rory's birthday.  This time I did a cover of one of my favourite of his tunes, Poltergeist.  Over the years Rory has released a plethora (ahem) of music under various guises.  He released lo-fi songs with me under the name Nachmi, then we had unlistenable noise jams with myself and Adam Thomas as Over Kodiak.  As ocdc, noise tone poems, sweet little piano suites dedicated to various women, and some truly cracking lo-fi indie pop songs.  An EP or two of full band Brighton indie folk frolicking with Dancehalls.  Next up some more cracking guitar pop through the moniker, Shrieks and then some joke tribute songs written with me as Golden Twat.  The man's a fricking genius and my version of Poltergeist was an attempt to capture his lo-fi spirit.  I recorded everything in one afternoon, mixing in the evening and a final mix in the morning.  I also decided to stay true to my own recorded beginnings and use only acoustic guitar, melodica and some lightly sprinkled percussion.  A dollop of Hellman's and you're away.  May have got some of the words wrong.  It's what the man would have wanted.

Following the success of their debut, Laish return between albums to offer up a taster of things to come. This EP finds Laish in contemplative mode, asking the big questions and waiting impatiently for the answers.

Many discovered this joyous folk-infused band through their freely downloadable song and video, She is Clever; a humorous and touchingly delivered song exploring male ineptitude and female adoration. This EP marks a transition from the original band line up and the sparse sound of the first album, an album that received a glowing reception from many including Mojo magazine who were impressed by its “beguiling songs of love”.

Laish have grown up and changed up. The original line up has been transformed and now features the finest that the Willkommen Collective of Brighton has to offer. Daniel Green still provides the songs, the delicately finger picked and intensely strummed guitars and that voice. Emma Gatrill and Martha Rose provide the angelic voices and lead instrumentation of violin, clarinet and accordion; and Dan Harding and Patrick Lawrence now lay down the solid rhythm foundation that has seen their live sound turned up a few notches.

Green explains: “I have begun to loosen my grip on my songs. What started life as a song-writing and bedroom recording obsession has now grown into this fully functioning band. This new set of musicians is invigorating and we are knocking out new songs by the week. This EP perhaps marks this transition. I am still in control here but starting to relinquish some responsibility.”

The results are captivating. The EP begins with a live favourite and the song accompanied by a new music video: Obituaries, a haunting mantra of a man's obsession with death and legacy and displaying the new band at their noisiest and most intense. Visions explores similar themes but from a more personal, reflective perspective with a delicately textured and rhythmically surprising epic, recalling something of Neil Young and the production sound of Jim O'Rourke. Leave me to Lie Alone is a song by Frances Donnelly of Animal Magic Tricks. Danny: “I used to play this song with Frances at house parties and she always enjoyed my version. She told me she had abandoned the song, I could have it. I feel the song has been good to me. My version also has Kristin McClement offering her serene vocals.”

This is What I Know is a small song. A song of shared sympathy, questioned legacy and once again, death. You find Daniel alone again in that small room in Brighton with just a guitar, capturing a fragile and intimate performance – no band, just a one-take improvised banjo part and a recorded interruption that draws the song to an unexpected conclusion.

2012 will be the busiest year for Laish. A new album, Obituaries, is days from completion and they are impatient to get it out into the world as these new songs make up the bulk of their exciting and varied live shows. Go see them if you can!
