My first original to share with the world. Named for an iconic part of the 5 freeway between LA and SF — I'm in a long-distance relationship with someone in LA, so I spend a lot of time driving. I started working on this while in LA one weekend and finished it the next week back home in SF, so I wanted to acknowledge that split in my time and location…

Curricular 05.05.2023

Phonic Mirror # 11 is called Love is Lovely War Is Ugly. It's a new mix of music from the '80s and '90s: These tunes span digital reggae exploration, midi-mayhem, dancehall b-side digital delay versions, and soul-phasing creative covers. For the past seven years, I've collected 45s and records from the Caribbean and the cities folks migrated to. I've had boxes and boxes of LPs and 45s disorganized for a while and recently had a moment to sit and listen more. It's been hard to separate the ones I don't want; for every song I might not like, the B-side version sheds light on a creative take on the A-side. Play this loud, and make sure you have bass.

The original track was pretty tonally chaotic. I picked out a few frequencies and from that chose to jam (for the most part) in B melodic minor/harmonic minor but there's a lot of fourths which gives it kind of a goofy feel. There's also some chromatic moments.
