There is a moderate ethnic minority population of Nepalese people in Hong Kong, forming roughly 0.5% of the total population, approximately 40,000 Hong Kong Nepalese citizens. The Nepalese are one of the fastest growing ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

Majority of the Nepali population of Hong Kong are the offspring of Gurkha soldiers who were fierce fighters serving the British Army from 1814. After the handover in 1997, they were permitted to stay in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, there is only one newspaper in Nepalese language. Everest Media Limited has published Everest Weekly since 1st May, 2000. It carries both Hong Kong and Nepal news but focuses local Nepalese activities. It translates many articles from local English newspaper such as South China Morning Post. It is rather popular and each publication reaches 1,500 sales volume.
