“Green Tara embodies the activity of all buddhas. Her special quality is protection from the eight terrors (drolma jigpa gyay gyob). After his death, Dudjom Lingpa appeared to his son, Tersay Dorje Dradul, in a vision and gave him this Green Tara practice. It is extremely profound and powerful, yet very easy to practice and accumulate. It offers protection from all our fear and suffering, whether immediate or long-term. Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche always did this practice and very often gave it to his monastery and drubdra as well as to many other students, so I thought it would be very special for us to do.” - Lama Tharchin Rinpoche

The Good Eon, 5 March 2022, Online - Part 2

This sutra was initiated by Shakyamuni Buddha, at the end of a retreat in Vaishali. Present were monks, bodhisattvas, ghosts, nagas and rakshas: an audience of many different types of beings. Among them was a bodhisattva called Supreme Joy, who posed 17 questions concerning how a bodhisattva can help all sentient beings. These questions lead us outside the limits of conventional thinking, to consider what it means to have genuine compassion for the multiplicity of sentient beings. This eon is good because more than 1,000 Buddhas and more than 84,000 ways of accessing the truth will appear.

Bardo teachings are commonly believed to be concerned with death but in fact encompass the whole of the Buddha’s teachings. The Tibetan word bardo refers to an intermediate state, between past and future, a crossing or a junction, in which a decision has to be made. This place of decision, this cognizance, is the bardo. This bardo is none other than our buddhanature, innately perfect, which the bardo practices lead us to uncover and reveal. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains the bardo states and their associated practices, drawing on commentaries by Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche and Tsele Natsok Rangdrol.

Nepal is a magical land with a very strong cultural connection to the Buddhadharma. Many stories are told about the activities of buddhas and bodhisattvas, and the landscape itself is highly symbolic: Kathmandu is said to be planned by Manjushri and its amazing crafts to be manifestations of his activity. Culture is so important, but all cultures hijack the Buddhadharma with their own interpretations of what is in essence so simple: awakening to the truth. We need to be mindful about culture, yet we need these symbols and legends to communicate about the Buddhadharma.

Śāntideva’s Bodhicaryāvatāra is probably one of the most intensive, beautiful and systematic mind trainings that one can encounter. This is not just a simple message to overcome gross emotions, discursive thoughts and agitation. The text really offers us a much more profound view into the essence of the mind, why it needs to be trained, how it can be trained and ultimately, why it does not need to be trained. The way of the bodhisattva has the connotation of a warrior, whose aim is to fight the battle of ignorance, not only for oneself but for all beings who are bound by emotions, defilements and ignorance. The quintessence of the bodhisattva path is not to be in samsara but also not to aspire to nirvana. Śāntideva teaches systematically that this is achievable. We will have to understand the relationship between relative truth and ultimate truth. Immediately it sounds as if there are two truths that need to be in relationship with one another, but this is not the case. All the bodhisattva skilful means such as generosity, discipline, patience and diligence are taught by the Buddha as a way to invoke and actualise wisdom. If the wisdom is lost, all the skilful means and even the act of one-pointedness or samādhi concentration is like the blind leading the blind in a desert.

寂天菩薩的《入菩薩行論》可能是一個人能值遇的最深入、最美好、最系統的修心訓練之一。它不僅僅是一個簡單的訊息用來對治粗重的煩惱、散漫的念頭和焦慮不安，這部教文還給了我們有關心之本質的更加深刻的教授：為何心需要被訓練，它會如何被訓練，而究竟而言，為何它並不需要被訓練。菩薩道具有戰士的內涵，其目的是與無明戰鬥，不僅為自己，也為一切受煩惱、染污和無明束縛的眾生。菩薩道的精髓是不住輪迴，亦不希求涅槃。寂天菩薩系統地教導我們這是可以實現的。我們需要理解世俗諦和勝義諦之間的關係。乍聽起來好像是有兩個真理需要把它們聯繫在一起。但事實並非如此，所有菩薩的善巧方便，如佈施、持戒、忍辱和精進，都是佛陀教導的作為一種喚醒和證悟智慧的方法。如果失去智慧，所有的善巧方便，甚至是專止的行為或三摩地禪修，都好像是盲人在沙漠中引導盲人而已。
