The Rest

Still, I keep myself, I take
to bed. One lung is red. Cut red
flowers hung in pink water.

My other lung is out of  line.
From one lung, I tell the truth.
From the other lung, I lie.
Cut pink flowers hung in red water.

Like a pain, the truth is mine.
The lie is that today I want to die.
Cut red water hung in pink flowers.

The rest of it is stillness, rest.
A soft cough into a hard pan.
A hard cough into a soft plane.
Cut pink water hung in red flowers.

Pink Water

On July 9 each year the star Eltanin (aka Edasich) reaches its Midnight Culmination – a significant event in the musical and spiritual mythology of Ceol Sidhe. Eltanin is the "right eye" star of the constellation Draco the Dragon. We of Ceol Sidhe know that illustrious reptile as "Aegnemon." This is the musical story of Aegnemon, The White Star Dragon.

The piece begins with NASA recordings of sound generated by data from two prominent stars in Draco: Edasich (Eltanin) itself and 74 Draconis, a Hyper Giant multiple star system within Draco. These recordings were created using brightness measurements from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which were then converted into rhythms and sound.

Midnight culmination refers to the moment when a star or constellation reaches its highest point in the sky at midnight local time. This occurs when the star crosses the observer's local meridian, the north-south line in the sky, at the time of midnight.

Aegnemon is sleeping
in her cave of starlight,
turning in the dark night,
breathing magic into her dreams.  Soon she wakes and rises,
beats her wings of star dust.
Churning flame and wind gust,
Aegnemon the White Star flies!

And as she travels, 
her wings make thunder,
tearing clouds asunder
while people watch in wonder.

They revere her,
even as they fear her,
for they hold dear her
constancy in restless skies.

Now she rises higher,
with unbridled power
to her midnight bower,
culminating at her zenith.

Star Hunter pursues her,
chases her, and woos her.
He cannot refuse her! Aegnemon guards heaven’s door!

She tends her warm eggs
within her strong legs
‘til they awaken.
Their names are 
Poetry, Peace, and Forgetting.

But the first gold sunray
 burns night back into day.
And the dragon flies away.
Aegnemon must sleep once more!

Aegnemon is sleeping
in her cave of starlight,
turning in the dark night,
keeper of celestial fire!
