there is blood everywhere
blood on the green white green flag
blood on the national anthem
blood on the coat of arms
blood on the politician’s range rovers’ letter plate
blood on the market woman’s fanta crate
that was used to elevate the women that spread love ( not hate )
blood on the uniforms of military head of states
blood on the looters, thugs and hoodlums in governance

I am dancing in the archive
I am dancing to the protest songs my grandmothers sang
in 1929 when aba women overthrew colonial taxation.
and in the late 1940s when egba women overthrew colonial taxation 
and as I dance in yesterday’s archive
made of protest songs, slogans,
memes and caskets
fundraising and education
all i want is for us to remember 
our grandmothers’ strategies

years ago,
these women danced in their archive
organised protests just like us
shouted and sung just like us

since history will repeat itself 
can we pause and rewind to our grandmothers times
were profit too was prioritised over human life
where police and policing were colonial apparatus
where a toll gate and colonial taxation had the same thing in common

so can we pause and rewind to our grandmothers times
and use the lessons they left
one. political organising must be rooted in
abolitionist thinking
so abolish the police
two. organising must be done with strategy and in unity.
three. organising must stand side by side with consciousness raising

who have produced their legacies

lanaire is a poet, playwright ,performer and documentary filmmaker.

fusing poetry and music together, the artistic stylings of lanaire have already put her on the map as one of the most exciting and innovative rising artists in the uk. from the publishing of her poetry anthology, ‘of ivory and ink’ in 2017, lanaire’s writing has been steeped in the rich history of nigerian voices that history has threatened to forget.

her ability to tackle topics like feminism, faith and family in an engaging and captivating manner, led to her being named one of the 30 artists commissioned by the coventry city of culture trust. her play, ‘an evening with verse writer’, (tristan bates, 2018); (shop front theatre, 2019); (warwick arts centre, 2019); (story story festival, 2021) received an artistic development award as it blurred the lines between music, traditional storytelling, and theatre, inviting the audience to become active participants in a world of her own creation.

lanaire has opened for young stars like ajebutter and odunsi. ‘ancient history’, her 2018 collaborative ep with King Solomon, was another artistic leap, putting her poetry to music and letting it bleed into the dizzying raps from king solomon. her work on Black feminist history and memory has appeared in the BBC, africa writes, birmingham rep theatre, tate modern more. some of her other credits include writing and voicing an audio play for ‘the future show’ and ‘change your style’ , a poetry film that explored black women’s hair journey(s) whilst mixing childhood songs with poetry and monologues inspired by salon conversations.
