Two brothers live in the same part of town but they aren’t together. One stares at the other and starts to think through why he is feeling this sort of grudge he has built up.

Grudge

A man is on the beach when he sees a vision (or maybe a real person) someone who looks like his mother. She comes to sit by him and he starts to day dream about his old life. He sits and talks to this vision ( or real person) and he starts to remember the good times they had when it was the Three of them together, his mother, brother and him. Three of them on the ride.

Three

A man reflects on the loss of his brother who he loved, and his death resets his world view. Carrying his brothers body to the funeral car was a moment he’ll never forget. Now he reflects on death, the after life and those people he meets who are alive who protest on behalf of the dead. Do the dead know our minds, hopes fears and desires or should we ignore this thought as they probably don’t know what they don’t know.

Behind the lyrics: I once knew of a Canadian guy who went traveling and ended up in Hong Kong and started working the bars and clubs. Being a western looking guy he got plenty of attention from the local girls and the owner of the bar would encourage him to show them a good time as it was good for business. At first he told me it was great, but after a while, he got tired of partying all night and day. He even said he started to get depressed there. He barely spent a night in his own bed. I laughed when I first heard him tell me this, cos he told it me as if I should feel sorry for him. It always stuck with me, at the time I didn’t get it, I was a young guy myself and couldn’t understand it. But as I’ve gotten older I think I realized what he was trying to say. I imagined a younger version of myself getting a message from my friend in Hong Kong and taking the story the wrong way, and instead of seeing it for what it was, heading off with my guitar, hitching rides through Mexico. When I start to experience the same lifestyle I write back to my friend to tell him the good news. But Jack writes back to tell me that he has given up on the easy life and is taking a new approach, he’s moving on. The Chorus sums up the confusion of the main character, he feels stuck between the women that he falls in love with each night and the open road that calls him to the next town. His hands shake, maybe cos he drinks too much, maybe because he can’t bring himself to stick his thumb out to leave town this time, he’s torn, is he breaking his own heart as well as the women he meets.
