DJ Snake x Yellow Claw x Spanker - Slow Down

As has been well-documented elsewhere, I spent much of 2012-2014 doing DJ sets of other people's music (as opposed to strictly my own) for the first time since the 90s. I had so much fun hunting around on the internet, looking for the latest weird stuff to work into the set. I once heard a comedian describe their process, how they tried a new joke each night until eventually, they had a solid 75 minutes of their best material. That's how this set felt to me. 2013 was also the peak of EDM, and although I never fully embraced that movement, if you were a DJ, it was impossible not to be influenced by it on some levels. As a result, there's a few moments in the set that, years later, seem a little borderline in terms of an authentic personality fit..but I guess that's the dichotomy between immediacy and timelessness. Long had rumors abounded of places where the veil between worlds was thin, where one could walk into other planes as though simply stepping into their own home. Such points of crossing were said to be rare, and the few that occurred naturally were secrets well kept by those who knew of their location for they held the potential for immense power in their shimmering surfaces. Each such point was said to be guarded by a Keeper, unknowable beings from neither side of the threshold who kept watch over all that passed through, their existence proven only by the remains of those deemed unworthy that lay before their lairs.

For one who possessed apt knowledge of such places, passage through such portals was indeed possible with proper preparation. On rare occasions, when the energies of the earth rested in perfect balance, such portals would appear in the most isolated portions of the world. Those who could foresee this would wait patiently in such places for the day of crossing, preparing themselves for this most unlikely of opportunities. In focused ritual they would etch symbols into the gate’s position, warding them from the Keeper’s wrath. As the portal appeared they would take the momentous single step into the beyond, striding confidently into a world unknown as they passed through THE DOOR.

EATBRAIN veteran L 33 returns to the label with his next solo EP, THE DOOR, as he continues to champion his energetic tech focused sound on the like minded label. In 2009, I consulted for, and appeared in, Activision's DJ Hero video game.   As part of my involvement, I performed at quite a few industry events and eventually did a couple of club dates.  Some of these sets were more rehearsed than others, and the quality varied.  This one, recorded live on Halloween night at a KCRW benefit, was far and away my favorite of the bunch...both in terms of technical display and song selection.  I'll post some of the other recorded sets later, there's some nice moments along the way.- DJ Shadow
