''I want to go where you are from.''

That is what the boy told the white DOCTOR who showed up one day at a crowded hospital in Sierra Leone.

Soldiers had conquered the boy's village and he had lost his whole family. Then the snake bit him and ruined his leg. Now people at the hospital were asking the DOCTOR to cut the boy's leg off.

The DOCTOR, Ian M. Zlotolow, had not come to cut off legs or adopt little boys, but he did not say the second part out loud. The boy, Lansana Lapia, 8, was fierce in hobbling into a refugee soccer game on his rickety wooden crutches. The doctor felt a strange, strong connection to this orphan, he recalled. He suddenly announced that DOCTORS in New York could save the leg.

That's how it began. Now Lansana was stretched out on the blond hardwood floor in Dr. Zlotolow's sunny, spacious Greenwich Village apartment. He was speaking English, mastering Nintendo and calling Dr. Zlotolow Dad.

He scoots on his rump and uses one leg, but not for long. His doctors say he may walk by the end of the year.

''Come on man, let's play soccer,'' he said, flashing his lethal smile.

Dr. Zlotolow, 58, met Lansana while in Africa making prosthetic ears for people mutilated by war violence in Sierra Leone. Dr. Zlotolow, a specialist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, felt that he could save the boy's leg and save him from a life as a street beggar. So he arranged for United Nations health officials to bring Lansana to New York in January 2002 on an EMERGENCY MEDICAL visa.

Since then, the boy has had nine major operations to lengthen his leg, including one last week at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to pin a brace to his leg to stretch the bone until it attaches to his foot.
