When I was commissioned by the LA Choral Lab to write a piece for our Spring 2016 concert, I immediately thought of two major factors that would eventually shape the work. First,  it must be current and relevant (especially to Angelenos, as it will be sung by Angelenos). This led me to ask my partner Michael Yarsky to write text about the drought in California. Secondly, it must explore different vocal styles and timbral possibilities that the LA Choral Lab singers are capable of, as the group is composed of versatile singers who comfortably live in a variety of vocal styles. The result was a 12 minute prayer for rain, that takes us on a journey of acrid lands, rain dances, and finally a shower of snow waters.

This piece was commissioned and performed by Jennifer Tham and the SYC Ensemble Singers at the 2017 installment of Three (Tatlo) - a festival of 3 Asian choirs. I dedicate this piece to a world filled with corruption, religious conflict, and extremist ideologies; a world that is sorely in need of peace and unity. Unity that is symbolized by the gathering and singing together of 3 excellent choirs from 3 different countries, separated by seas and oceans, but together in heart and spirit. 

Brothers of the sea,
Look at the stars,
Look at the deep blue
And set the world free.
Our right is to live and be free;
