En este episodio de Detrás del Telón, escucharán una charla presentada por Gerardo Kleinburg y amablemente compartida por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y Descarga Cultura UNAM.

Pietro Mascagni (Livorno, Italia, 1863-Roma, 1945). Compositor y director de orquesta. Además de Cavalleria rusticana, también compuso L'amico Fritz, Il piccolo Marat, Guglielmo Ratcliff, I Rantzau, y Nerone. En la última etapa de su vida sufrió el desprecio y desprestigio en el ámbito social y artístico ya que fue partidario de Benito Mussolini durante el régimen fascista. Ruggero Leoncavallo (Nápoles, 1857 - Montecatini Terme, 1919). Compositor y libretista. Después del rotundo éxito de su ópera Los payasos, intentó hacer una trilogía basada en el Renacimiento, pero tras la fría recepción que tuvo la primera entrega —Los Medici— claudicó en ese proyecto. Su obra La Bohéme fue eclipsada por la homónima versión de Puccini. Dentro del mismo género también escribió Zaza y además es autor de la popular canción Mattinatta, que escribió para Enrico Caruso. En esta charla, Gerardo Kleinburg pone sobre la mesa elementos históricos, sociales y políticos que antecedieron y sucedieron a la creación y estreno de esas dos particulares óperas que surgieron en una Italia recién conformada como nación unificada. Además, el especialista en el género aprovecha el contexto de estas obras que generalmente se representan en el mismo programa, para abordar de lleno las características del verismo italiano, estilo que dejó de lado los temas célebres y rebuscados para asirse elementos cotidianos con historias melodramáticas. Para Kleinburg, “nosotros mismos llevamos siempre a cuestas este tipo de historias, son nuestras historias, somos los personajes de esas óperas veristas y eso es lo que las convierte en entrañables y repugnantes a un tiempo.”

On this episode of Behind the Curtain, you’ll be listening to a talk presented by Gerardo Kleinburg and graciously shared by the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Descarga Cultura UNAM.
 
Pietro Mascagni (Livorno, Italy, 1863-Rome, 1945). Composer and conductor. In addition to Cavalleria rusticana, he also composed L'amico Fritz, Il piccolo Marat, Guglielmo Ratcliff, I Rantzau, and Nerone. In the last stage of his life he suffered contempt and loss of prestige in the social and artistic spheres since he was a supporter of Benito Mussolini during the fascist regime. Ruggero Leoncavallo (Naples, 1857-Montecatini Terme, 1919). Composer and librettist. After the resounding success of his opera Pagliacci, he tried to make a trilogy based on the Renaissance. However, due to the cold reception following the first installment, I Medici, he gave up on that project. His opera La bohéme was overshadowed by Puccini's version. He also composed Zaza, and is known for the popular song “Mattinata,” which he wrote for Enrico Caruso. In this talk, Gerardo Kleinburg explores the historical, social and political elements that preceded and followed the creation and premiere of these two operas, which emerged in the recently formed and unified nation of Italy.  In addition, he takes advantage of the context of these works—which are generally presented in the same program—to fully address the characteristics of Italian verismo, a style that put aside famously far-fetched themes to spotlight elements of everyday life through melodramatic stories. Kleinburg states, "We ourselves always carry these types of stories on our shoulders. They are our stories; we are the characters in those operas, and that is what makes them endearing and off-putting…beautiful and unsettling…at the same time."
