This short excerpt is from soundscape, voice mix and music towards the end of the show, as the performers onstage move and dance with an enormous piece of fabric, dancing to their own voices talking about the space they are in - the Dancehouse.

In the theatre, I had use of two speakers behind the audience and four speakers in front, as well as a sub woofer under the audience seats. The sounds you hear in this mix, which is a mix done with Dolby Atmos, gives some impression of the horizontal, spatial movement of the sounds, which increased in their sway and spiralling dynamic along with the performers.

||Reflections|| is an installation that discovers, highlights and enhances the rhythm and melody in everyday sounds, using the pavilion’s structure to reflect and focus these sounds, and weaving them into a musical chorus creating a synergistic, hyper-real experience of place and space.

This installation was constructed in stereo, played in a series of stereo pair speakers throughout the pavilion.

“Sonority I: magyar – Dancing on Blades” is a one hour installation featuring six storytellers simultaneously telling the same folktale of the Dancing Princesses, in six dialects of the Hungarian (magyar) language. The seventh storyteller is the sound design, created with field recordings of environment, dance, and music from Hungary along with effects and electronic music elements to enwrap audiences in the story world. An aural cinematic journey with a multi-layered spatial soundscape constructed of field recordings, music and dance gathered throughout Hungary and Transylvania.

Created in residence at the Spatial Sound Institute, Budapest, working with the 4DSOUND system – a large scale integrated hardware and software installation in a three storey, suspended warehouse studio, creating a fully omnidirectional sound environment.

This work was created in the space, for the space, over the three-month period of residency at the SSI. It was presented to the public in November 2018 as part of the Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology (CESSE) Conference and 4DSOUND ‘Inaudible Realities’ event.

The folktale type of the Dancing Princesses is very popular in Hungarian tradition. It is the story of a group of princesses (three, seven, or twelve, depending on the text) who sneak out of their palace every night and go into a magical realm to dance their shoes to shreds. They are not found out until a brave (male) hero secretly follows them on their nighttime journey. He discovers that they open a trapdoor in their room (or fly out the window, or otherwise sneak out, depending on the version) and pass through copper, silver, gold (sometimes diamond) forests, across a lake, and into a fabulous palace where they dance all night with princes/devils. He brings proof of his adventures to the king and in the end, he either marries one of the princesses or is otherwise rewarded, while the princesses are either married off or punished for their escapades.

Sonority I - Binaural Adaptation - Excerpts

This is the second live version of “Bizalom”, part of a performance for the Space and Sometimes Movement show at MPavilion, February 2019, working with a Yamaha wave-field synthesis sound system. 

“Bizalom” was initially conceptualised with the 4DSOUND system at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest (2018), during a period of early experimentation. I was playing with field recordings I’d made of the sea in Greece some time before, exploring the capability of the Budapest studio to create a moving, sounding ocean beneath my feet. I began to incorporate other field recordings from Greece and other travels, creating different weather states and environments to see if the omnidirectional 4DSOUND studio could fully re-immerse me in those memories (it could). 

The work became a sound meditation that I used as a practice of deep listening for myself and whomever came into the studio to listen. The work on this inspired me to think and write about how sound triggers memory of place, which then triggers more emotionally charged memories. 

I added a recording of the artists in the residency playing in a rainstorm that happened during this time. A train journey in Athens with a yappy dog. Street sounds in a Berlin suburb. Someone playing an old piano in a neighbour’s apartment in Paris. All real, fuzzy, moments in time, just moments when I’d thought to press record. I experimented with electronic pulses and suggestions of melody, exploring the emotional and narrative effects of introducing low and high frequencies and synthetic weather effects.

I’ve long been intrigued by the Seikilos epitaph, the oldest surviving complete musical notation; a timeless poetic message of living life. I had a MIDI file of the tune, that inspired another dimension to this work. 

I began to include my own poetic story prompts, inspired by meditations on the word “trust”, which I had ‘received’ as an answer to a question I took to the Delphi oracle years before. I enlisted the voices of other artists in residence, including Petko Ognyanov, Ana Amorós, Kate de Lorme, and Vladimir Razhev, to speak the word for trust in Greek, English, and Hungarian (“bizalom”). Petko also read the inscriptions from the Seikilos epitaph.

Instructions for listening: 

This is binaural audio, which approximates the way we experience sound in daily life. The spatial qualities of binaural sound only works in headphones - any will do, but over-ear headphones are best. 
Before you listen, make your body comfortable in whatever way you like, and put up a “do not disturb” sign on your door and your devices.

Give yourself 28 minutes of uninterrupted listening. Think of it as aural cinema, a short film in your mind, or an active dream. This is an invitation to surrender to your listening sense, to allow the sounds to suggest memories, feelings, textures, temperatures (the weather inside), and to allow your own internal storyteller to tell you your own story.

“Bizalom” was initially conceptualised with the 4DSOUND system at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest (2018). I developed it for different live sound systems over following years. I returned to it in residence at Arteles Creative Centre in Finland this year, developing a progressively complex spatial sound work about concepts of trust, creative inspiration, active dreaming, our emotional connection to changing weather patterns and “the weather inside”.

This is a work-in-progress 'sketch' of what will become a longer and more expansive spatial sound installation. This version was made for a listening session at Arteles to share with fellow resident artists. It roughly sketches five 'scenes', calling on five Muses, responding to five environments and memories.

Consciousness 3 // Sleep

The 'FCACheartsJogja: Exquisite Corpstallation' project at Footscray Community Arts Centre, Melbourne, brought artist groups from Australia, East Timor and Indonesia together for a collaborative installation. A succession of five artist groups each had 24 hours to create a site-specific work responding to a theme set by the preceding group, using only a thread of an idea left by the previous group. Each group didn't see the others' works until the final reveal on March 5, 2015.

Each evening I went in and recorded the artists working, and speaking about their work, the sounds and atmospheres surrounding them in the arts centre beside the railway tracks on the Maribyrnong river. I cut up and mixed this hour for the exhibition reveal. Because of the process (and one massive thunderstorm) audio quality varies - using these textures, which reflect the different dynamics of each night, as layers building up a sense of the at times chaotic, always free open and good spirited nature of the artists at work, and the amazing cohesiveness between the works emerged at the reveal.

Grinning Soul - Bowie Cut-up

Influenced by the surrealists and based on the principles of cumulative assembly, EXQUISITE is a visual, performance and sound art exploration into creating a seamless, temporary and immersive work. Groups work to set themes over a 24-hour period, weaving narrative threads, not knowing how the work before them looks until the day of the Big Reveal.

EXQUISITE 2016 took place in Melbourne at the Footscray Community Arts Centre as part of Festival of Live Art 2016

This is a one-hour art documentary soundwork, following me as I dip in and out of the process across the week, discovering the growing collaborative installation as it happens.

The painter Max Ernst called it mental contagion. The shared consciousness that forms when people gather and work together. Between the first and second world wars, in a chaotic and manipulated world, the Surrealists gathered, using a technique of an old parlour game, in which one would create, or write, hide what they created or wrote and pass it on. The next would create, or write, and pass it on. One result was “le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau” - "the exquisite corpse will drink the young wine.” 
The Surrealists believed that apparently random juxtapositions revealed a deeper truth and also revealed a deep connection within a community. A communal madness, shared consciousness. In our time, a time of the greatest upheaval and movement of people since the last world war, revealing connections seems to be more important than ever. 

For five nights at the end of a Melbourne Summer, I travel to Footscray Community Arts Centre, on the Maribyrnong River west of Melbourne. I am a fly on the wall, during a process of collective consciousness, connective arts. But I don’t stay on the wall. I fly around, hover over the artists, recording the process as it happens, I am the fly in between the pages of the game. I see what they see, experience the moment as it happens without seeing the fullness of the work until the end, along with everyone else.

In 2016 it is the third EXQUISITE cumulative assembly. Groups of artists, some who know each other well, some who’ve only just met, have 24 hours to create a visual and performance art work. Each group is presented with a theme, or a clue - a series of words or a concept, plus a fragment of visual art - given by the previous group. They don’t know what the group before them has done beyond this clue. They leave a clue for the next. 

On the 5th March, all works are revealed in a collective performance. 

Can we put this together into one message? What kind of mental contagion has this cumulative assembly achieved? As I leave the exhibition, the party is just starting. And the biggest feeling, the most contagious feeling, is joy. Pleasure in communion, in creation, which is art. And community. 
This is what Footscray Community Arts Centre does, and this is also what all of these arts groups they’ve been bringing together do - Krack Studios, SURVIVE! Garage, Ace House, The Contemporary Pacific Arts Festival, Artlife, Art Music Today - this is what these collectives are doing every day, here in Australia, in Indonesia, in Thailand, in Timor-Lest. Across the Pacific and across the world.

Perempuan Merdeka : WOW Women Art & Politics Residency Soundscape

Adaptation of the medieval poem Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose), by Guillaume de Lorris.

Written by de Lorris around 1230, Roman de la Rose's purpose is 'to both entertain and teach others about the Art of Love'. It's a curious, rich poem open to many interpretations. I adapted the essence of Lorris' original story, discarding the more moralistic (and enormous) coda to the poem by Jean de Meun. In Lorris' story, the dreamer enters a walled garden and discovers the Fountain of Narcissus, in which he sees a beautiful rose, and while looking at it, is struck by numerous arrows by the God of Love causing him to fall in love with the rose.

"Bizalom" Mix - Live in Athens

WOVEN is an interactive performance that links the audience, performers and the environment together to create a shared experience. A presentation of textured work, safe, inclusive, intuitive, interactive and sensory in nature. Based primarily on a locally inspired love story, the tale has evolved and taken from its roots into, a boarder universal context. 

Produced and directed by Melody Shotade, devised over a duration of 6 weeks with the support of local performers, and narrators, Inclusive Arts Practitioner Nilgun Guven, Choreographer Trudy Radburn, Sound Producer Lisa Greenaway AKA LAPKAT and Artist Support Marjetka- Krizanic.

Performed at The Glade, Gasworks Arts Park, Melbourne, Australia, Saturday 2 March 2019.

Sound design for 6 speakers surrounding the audience and roving performers. Sounds moved in a horizontal, circular flow around them. During the live performance, live narration was mixed with the sounds and music.
