Realitycheck - Modern Talk (RNSC009)

Growing up in Milton Keynes, the largest of the "new towns" outside of London designed and built in the 1960s, perhaps explains why producer Nicholas Worrall is subconsciously drawn to clearly delineated sonic structures and flawed techno utopianism, two concepts that are ever present in both his sound and aesthetic approach to music.

Wordcolour (@wordcolour) was formed just two years ago, at a time when Worrall was habitually cutting up and splicing human voice samples ripped from YouTube memes, film dialogues and musique concrète tapes.

The first artistic demonstration of these ideas arrived in 2019 via his mixtape “I Want To Tell You Something” for the Blowing Up The Workshop platform. This unique set immediately grabbed the attention and support of the specialized music press and media, including Pitchfork and Resident Advisor.

“Tell Me Something” is Wordcolour’s official debut EP and heads straight for the dance floor. It is comprised of an unusual melting pot of influences that fuse the UK club sound, post-dubstep and a style akin to Paul Lansky's ‘90s musique concrète. “Tell Me Something” offers a vibrant leftfield, avant-garde techno and edgy electro, all immersed in the vast cosmos of the human voice.

Produced over a 3 year period these pieces, out of countless unfinished projects, were the only lossless files that were able to be recovered from backups online after Ronan’s laptop was stolen while travelling in Costa Rica in 2019. This music represents some of the important puzzle pieces of Ronan’s musical journey, exploring the distant moons of rave music while staying true to his roots as a jazz improviser and classical instrumentalist.

UK producer BufoBufo (Ritual Poison / Batrachian Records) brings his amphibious sound to the growing Scottish Highland based label. The ‘Potholing’ EP takes its name from the definition of ‘underground cave exploration’, with three original tracks that pull you further into the deep, dark sounds of underground rave.

‘Cave Network’ sets the tone for the EP, immersed in acid-like textures, deep sweeping pads and interchanging breaks rhythms. Second in is ’Giant Antlion’ with cosmic style analog arp’s that lift towards a hefty breaks / bass combo, then ‘Blue Demoiselle’ takes you back to the surface with a rolling breaks number smothered in dreamlike pads and uplifting melodics. London based producer - and Ritual Poison co-runner - Corporeal Face ties the EP up with a phenomenal twist on ‘Cave Network’.

We never intended to press those tunes to vinyl, to make a ravey gatefold, to get ourselves (back) online or to write this blurb. ​And we n​ever​ intended to commission a megamix by International Superstar Strepsil 64kbps.

Armed with only an 808, a tape machine and a grip of old Horror movie soundtracks DJ Cabbage (the rap-beat alter ego of Luca Lozano aka Planetluke.com) sat down and built the first volume of his Criminal Simulation series.

The project, which is a collaboration with Berlin based multi-faceted agency and lifestyle store Sporadic manifests in a C30 tape cassette with direct on-body printing and a longsleeve tshirt.

The tape features 10 separate tracks mixed continuously and harks back to the gory glory days of early Memphis tape rap, rough and unpolished, unapologetic and raw.
