Betoko began working on "I’m a Gin" 18 months ago in the renown Red Bus Recording Studios where George Michael, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Tina Turner, Jocelyn Brown and Imagination themselves have all recorded and where Betoko produces his work today. 
 
Betoko's idea behind "Im a Gin" was to revive the original retro-funky Imagination vibe.  "Im a Gin" contains elements of the authentic track using those same stems from the original; and produced by Betoko in the same studio where Imagination originally produced all of their tracks, they and Betoko used the same compressors, keyboards and console creating the highest sonic quality sound.

Already with the first LUX remix package (SK272, released Feb, 5th) Paskal & Urban Absolutes together with Sonar Kollektiv assembled the cutting edge of the current German club culture:
From Manuel Tur, Trickski over Sevensoul & Bender and Henry L & Ingo Sänger to Sello and Oliver Marquardt some of the hottest players in the game between Munich and Berlin handed in works which are by now default luggage of any upright DJ.

But also the second LUX remix suitcase packs a punch and is – be assured – jam-packed with potential club monsters of all the nights to come. Starting off things is this time not a German but the English man Jimpster. Having founded the deephouse empire Freerange Records this DJ and producer of outstanding merit knows exactly how to trim club music in order to cause frenzy on almost every dancefloor on this planet. His remix of “Bits Of Me” is taking the route towards Berlin School techno sure enough and gains pace, especially on the dub version.

The second track, “Hold Your Head Up”, remixed no more than four times (on the digital release), features the soul-soothing voice of Sonar Kollektiv act Arnold Kasar, who is working on his new solo album(!). Taking these vocal parts to account in particular, the remix by Dortmund based Larse embeds them into a sophisticated arrangement. Which could be shelved somewhere between smooth deep house and the contemporary interpretation of Boogie, which Larse is firmly campaigning for for a while now.
Berlin based Max Heese aka Langeberg (Drumpoet Community, Dessous Recordings etc.) attends to the matter in a total different way by pumping up the song with adrenaline and a hearty dash of testosterone. In over eight minutes you can witness the genesis of a danceable power bar. The 23-years old Kai von Glasow from Berlin is responsible for the probably most neoteristic remix in this series. His interpretation sees the encounter of hypermodern dub aesthetics and bass music how it should sound in 2014.

Last but not least and – as well as the remix by Kai von Glasow – only available on the digital release you get the version by Nils Penner. Having released already on Freerange Records and Wazi Wazi Music, the DJ and producer living in Munich impresses with a ludicrous drum and percussion programming while getting almost cosmic with the interweaving synth pads.

Five, or six remixes (if you count the dub version by Jimpster), which show again strikingly what is and will be the score in the best clubs worldwide in the next few months.

Cast your mind back to 1992. The world wide web had only just been invented, and mobile phones were for yuppies and drug dealers. The world we know today was just being born – and being born right at the same time, over in Chicago, was a little label called Large.

Large Music was the brainchild of Windy City resident Jeff Craven, who was worried that house music was in danger of being sidelined in its own birthplace, the international spotlight that had once shone on the pioneering Trax and DJ International imprints having moved on to New York labels such as Strictly Rhythm, Nervous and 8-Ball. “I thought a label with that kind of energy and underground profile could work in Chicago,” says Jeff.  So, pooling funds with a friend, he began finding talent and pressing records. Kerri Chandler's 'Raw Grooves EP' became the label's breakout release, and Large Music hasn't looked back since.

In fact, far from looking back, Large is a record label that's always been about looking forward. In the 90s, their catalogue featured the likes of DJ Sneak, Mateo & Matos and Dennis Ferrer when they were right at the start of their careers, not to mention providing a then-nascent UK garage scene with one of its most enduring anthems in the form of Roy Davis Jr's 'Gabriel'. In the 2000s, the Chicago-based label was quick to pick up on the deep and soulful house coming from the West Coast, releasing material from the likes of Halo, Jay-J, Rasoul, Miguel Migs and Julius Papp. And now as a new decade takes shape, we see Jeff embracing the techier deep house sound that's emerged out of Europe, with recent releases from the likes of Roland Nights, Evan Iff, James Dexter and Matthias Vogt.

Yet while fashions fluctuate and music mutates, one thing that hasn't changed is the Large A&R policy. It's simple: “My formula has always been to release music that I was really into and what I would play as a DJ,” says Jeff. “I'm still just as excited about house music as I was in 1992.” Which probably explains how Large has been able to stay relevant all these years – this is one veteran label that isn't content to endlessly rehash former glories, but who instead keep searching out new underground talent.

At the time of writing this, Large Music is 20 years old, with some 200 singles and 50 albums under their belt, and tracks licensed to over 400 compilations. Which means they've been putting out upfront house music on a weekly basis since before many of the people dancing to it in clubs this weekend were even born. They set out to ensure that house music didn't get sidelined in Chicago in the 90s. What they've actually achieved is to push house forward all over the world for two decades – and counting…
