You'd be hard pressed to come up with a production team with as diverse a CV as Decoder and Substance. Part of the hugely influential mid-nineties Bristol scene, between them they've run labels, promoted events, run a record shop and produced a slew of cutting edge underground D&B. And that's before we even get into what they've achieved with their worldwide chart-conquering band Kosheen. And now, for the first time in over a decade, we have some brand new Decoder and Substance material.

“Red” rolls in with a stripped-back rough-edged drum loop straight from the old skool. In the upper registers, Susie Ledge's sparkling vocals meld with silk-smooth strings to hold a perfect counterbalance. Then there's a hint of danger as bass tones rear their head, and the one and only Jakes steps up to the mic to signal the launch of a full-scale junglist assault. And better watch out for that second drop that takes things to a whole new level of filth.

Then Document One get their hands on the stems, and show how they do things. They open up with a pristine electro-tinged combination of percussive arpeggios and reprocessed snippets of Ms Ledge's vocals to create a whole new vibe. The drop brings out a liquid side to the tune, adding the funk that Document One like to bring to the party. Tight drum programming, syncopated bass and builds reinforced with Jakes bars mean that this mix is aimed directly at the dancefloor.

Finally, LA's in the house as Kronology bring their style to bear on “Red” too. They've deconstructed the track and scientifically re-engineered it as a DJ weapon, bringing energy straight from the word go. Rolling drums support the vocals in the intro, before a mighty detuned bassline drops. And the track keeps building from there, as additional layers of percussion raise the temperature. Adding in the extra ingredient of Susie's vocals and modulating pads give an extra twist of euphoria to proceedings. This is one to keep the rave moving.

“Red” combines the dark rave elements of classic Decoder and Substance tunes with the sultry soul that made Kosheen a household name across the globe. Their road-hardened experience combined with two crews from the new generation on remix duties, means that this release is due for some serious rotation.

15 Years of Technique – Summer Selection Album

It's sunshine time again. The time when we need a new D&B soundtrack to score our festivals, carnivals, pool parties and barbecues. And you'd struggle to find anyone better qualified to curate that soundtrack than Technique's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Just a quick glance at their immense back catalogue of anthemic releases or their packed international bookings diary is enough to demonstrate that they know exactly how to bring those summertime vibes.

Things kick off in suitably monumental fashion with a cut from the head honchos themselves, “I Need Somebody”. If you were looking out from a festival stage at a sea of excited hands in the air, this tune's searing vocal hook and unrelenting waves of bass would suit that scene perfectly. And, of course, this album contains a lethal dosage of similarly colossal tracks. For example, MaxNRG enlists a quirky vocal from Marianna to boost the hype-levels on “Headshot” and recent signing Kronology delivers the driving and euphoric “Untouchable”. Plus, there are some sizeable contributions to the big-room roll call from a few names you won't have seen on Technique before, like Oder's “Closer” and T-Phonic & Deadman's “Show Me the Way”.

But summer's not all about the shades-on daytime raving, we need some choice sunset material too for when things get a little darker. Document One and Spectrem exemplify this beautifully with the laid-back and jazzy “Falling” and the Kyphosis-laced “Fade” respectively. Helsinki's liquid maestros LAOS pass through to drop “City Lights” and “Belong”, and Tantrum Desire treats us to the effervescent “Sea Breeze”. For when things get darker still, there are tracks like the technoid, percussive world-unto-itself of Salaryman & Dark Machine's “Night Shift”. Guys like Conspire and Brian Brainstorm bring some full-on jungle, and the whole compilation is peppered with alternative sounds like Digital's dub workout “Groove Together”.

The thirty-one tracks here represent a cross-section of the mighty, multi-stranded, multi-form D&B scene and what it can do for summer 2015. There are names you'll know and names you might not know yet. There are huge mainstream anthems and shadow-bound subtleties. There are tunes for midday and tunes for four in the morning. And for four in the afternoon the next day. Ultimately, this isn't the sound of the summer, this is all the many different sounds of the summer put together on one album. So, the soundtrack's sorted, time to go out and have a summertime that's worthy of it!

L.A.O.S. aka Large Amount Of Soul was established when three longterm djs and producers Abraham, D-bex and JayEm decided to join forces in music making. They share the same passion for music and their mission was to create earth-shaking dancefloor rollers that stand out from any set. Vocalist&songwriter Alexx joined L.A.O.S. in 2010 and she is featured in most of the vocal tracks that come out from the L.A.O.S. studio.

L.A.O.S. has releases under their belt from top-notch labels like Bass=Win (UK), Viper (UK), Hospital (UK), Raw Canvas(UK), Spearhead (UK), Liquicity (NL), High Tea Music (NL) to name a few. Their tracks have had dj support from names like Gilles Peterson, Marc Mac, Annie Mac (BBC Radio1), Futurebound, London Elektricity, Zinc, Blu Mar Ten, Blame, Kasra and Utah Jazz just to name a few. They have also done quite a few of remixes for various artists.

L.A.O.S. has played dj sets all around the world in their career and all three guys are skilled djs. Recently they have been performing also as a dj&mc combo with their vocalist Alexx.
