Real Music for Unreal Times by Kumea Sound is the second album by the Finnish sound artist Lauri Wuolio. Kumea Sound’s self-titled debut album (2013) was also structured around the instrument named handpan, or cupola.

On the new album all post-production processes are stripped away and a sense of deep passion and commitment to his instrument is transmitted from Wuolio’s playing. "I wanted the album to reveal something instead of trying to hide mistakes", Wuolio says. "Apart from mixing, nothing was changed or added after the recordings."

Even the haunting reverb was created and captured live in the studio with a complex setup of speaker arrays and experimental 360 degree microphones. The reverb itself was sampled in the historical Russian monastery of Solovetsky.

The recording of an instrument that has an exceptionally rich sound has turned out to be quite a challenge. Real Music for Unreal Times may so far be the most ambitious attempt to capture the full sound spectrum of the young instrument in all its history.

Real Music for Unreal times is a meditative counteraction to the experience of soullessness. Simultaneously timeless and contemporary, this acoustic percussion work reminds us of how rich and complex music may derive from a simple starting point.

This track, Ai Du, was recorded properly 6 years later by Ali when he joined forces with Ry Cooder on the Grammy Award-winning Talking Timbuktu album. We recorded this as part of a jam we arranged with Ali at Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh in 1988, when he just happened to have a night off on the Scottish part of a UK Tour. It was recorded on the Leapfrog mobile analogue 24-track, courtesy of producer/engineer Claude Harper, with a line-up of illustrious Edinburgh jazz and blues musicians including: Mike Travis on drums/percussion, Kenny Ellis on electric bass, Dave McNiven on keyboards, Jim Sutherland on percussion, and myself on guitar. Ali was accompanied by his own percussionist Roger Cissé. 
We heard much later that this session was what inspired Ali to make the recording with Ry Cooder. I'd like to think that's true! If you like this track, please leave a comment - we'd love to hear from you!

Singer, multi-instrumentalist, self-taught, composer, producer of her own songs and researcher of sound as a tool for healing and connection.
From an early age the musical path began in choir, private singing, dance and theater classes. Along with the desire to sing appeared the desire to play the guitar, drum, charango and any instrument that sounds. Thus discovering the path of self-learning and dedication driven by the enjoyment of expressing music.
Upon reaching the 3rd age of seven, spirituality became more and more present, and as a consequence began a great journey, letting go of everything, to go and discover oneself in the world. This is how she became a nomad / gypsy / traveler / pilgrim for several years. Touring various countries, where music was always present. He was part together with 9 musicians of different nationalities, of a Soundhealing caravan Cara ’Caravana de Cura ´´, where they traveled much of Brazil until they reached Colombia, through Venezuela, offering therapy in Yoga centers and places to end.
He also entered learning with master plants, and learned the power of singing and sound as a means of healing, hence the Medicine and devotional music. He has participated in different retreats, such as diets of plants in the Amazon jungle, search for vision, prolonged fasts, and retreats of silence and meditation.
On his travels he met songs from different cultures such as Balkan music, Sufi music from Turkey, music from the Sahara desert, African music and music from India, where he had the privilege of briefly getting started in traditional singing.
Currently she is dedicated to being a Mother, to continue recording inspirations and participates in sound encounters and concerts.
