Bunions are bony lumps that form on the side of the feet. In some cases, the bump is painless. However, bunions will cause the toes to crowd together over time, developing pain and possibly a permanent deformity.

Bunions are generally thought to be genetic. Some conditions that contribute to the development of bunions include flat feet, excessively flexible ligaments, and abnormal bone structure.

You cannot get rid of bunions or stop them getting worse yourself, but there are things you can do to relieve any pain. Nonsurgical treatments that may relieve the pain and pressure of bunions include changing shoes, taking medications or applying ice. If conservative treatment cannot relieve your symptoms, you might need surgery.
