In 1914 Ernest Shackleton led a team to cross the Antarctic via the South Pole. The expedition was not successful and The Endurance collapsed into the sea in November 1915. In March 2022 an expedition finally found the ship in remarkable condition on the seabed.

This piece is about that discovery, but also a metaphor. Like 1.1m people in the UK, I am living with Long Covid. Our lives are held in suspended animation. My new album  'Still'  is raising funds for Long Covid research. It is only available on Bandcamp, though I am releasing one track per month on mainstream platforms like Spotify. The Endurance is the first.

The BFI National Archive has kindly given us permission to use and edit original expedition footage from 1914/5 to make a video on YouTube @larrymindelmusic

One Fine Day

In Scottish folklore The Bean Nighe is a grotesque washerwoman you might meet on a dark night by water. She's washing clothes - which might be yours, and they might be soaked in blood.... or not.

I spend much of my time in the Hebrides, and Ghost Story imagines a walk out as night falls on my local moorland by the sea. The rest is history...

Larry Mindel makes music that draws on folk and jazz traditions. Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, Rickie Lee Jones, Sam Amidon from North America, and Laura Marling, John Martyn, Richard Thompson, Karen Matheson and Karine Polwart from the UK are key influences - but also new classicists like Olafur Arnalds, bands such as Steely Dan and minimalists like Terry Riley.

Geographic and human landscapes come together -  in the frozen Antarctic, a fragile wetlands in New Zealand,  the Thames estuary, the dry red dust of the Australian outback, the lowlands of Suffolk, the remote islands of the Scottish Hebrides.... 

Larry came to music late in life. From an early age, he has written songs, made private mixtapes, and gigged in various bands. It's only now, in his seventies, that he's hitting his stride...
