No newcomer to the music scene Gene Farris started Djing when he was 17.  Gene then slide effortlessly from behind the turn table to in front of drum machines and synthesizers ….releasing his first track back in 1995 on Relief Records. Gene is one of the reasons why we have the music scene we have today.  He has worked with and learned from some of the very best….like the Chicago’s House legendary DJ ….Ron Hardy and the infamous Lil Louis. He has always known how to get crowds up on their feet and keep them there…and when he wanted to start doing the tracker side of things he began recording on Relief Records…following and sometimes leading that Chicago track tradition.
Now here we are today…some 24 years later spellbound by his newest album…THEN & NOW.   We are finding ourselves unable to turn this new album off….unable to even fast forward from one track to another.  One minute he takes us back to his early days with the heavy beats and pounding rhythm of some all time fan favorites like Sight & Sound, Perkin Hard, & Pitrippin….and the next he has catapulted us into the grimy…throbbing new cuts like My Love, Spin Cycle, & Shimmy Shimmy.

You can feel Gene’s heart and soul in each track.  While your body responds to each note…each throbbing beat….you are once again connected to that unmistakable combination of talent, timing, rhythm and undeniable passion. Continuing their long-standing gathering of techno’s most talented producers, Second State will introduce the next installment of their revered ‘SUM’ series, featuring artists from Germany, the UK and US, the Netherlands and Italy.

Minimal techno maven @camea welcomes us with “Higher Power”, a wistful opener that manages to retain delicateness despite it’s booming kick drum. Shakers and soft keys are pebbled throughout, scrambling over rippled claps and a gritty synth that wades in and out of the ethereal elements. Berlin based @charlyschaller is next with punchy cut “Sama Sama”. Metallic textures and a robust kick are gradually joined by a gurgling vocal sample reverberating in the distance, while the dwindling melody surrounds. Dutch producer @discoveregbert presents “Mnmlstc”, complete with an earth shattering kick and wompy, wonky bass. A repetitive robotic vocal is peppered in, along with white noise that punches throughout. Techno powerhouse @harvey-mckay drives on with “Dragon’s Dynamite”, an impactful dancefloor weapon armed with a growling hoover synth, marching hi hats and babbling vocal sample combined with hard-stepping beats.

Berlin Techno band @komfortrauschen are featured with “Jamal”, designed with a warped kick and choppy elements that swipe consistently to create a raucous atmosphere. Frantic, spacey keys circle around with the odd interjection, before the kick is reintroduced as a heavier, authoritative component. Turkey born, Canada based producer @kuvoka pivots the mood of the record with the groovy, analogue driven “Randomize”. A pulsating beat is accompanied by furious hi hats and shakers, creating a feeling of urgency. Londoner @larrycadge follows with “Lost The Way” and gets straight down to business with a monstrous kick that’s occasionally reigned in to allow twinkling keys to direct and give structure. A curious bloop sounds amidst the heaviness, giving personality and lightness to the track, along with chords that pur underneath the weight. “Escape” is the closer, produced by familiar Second State face @leriocorrado. Hurried hi hats and a bubbling vocal characterise this cut, the kick thunders towards the finale, driving this compilation to a powerful close.

Camea’s imprint, Neverwhere, is honored to release Larry’s next solo EP, Dissociative Amnesia.

The titled track is a meteoric, head spinning tune with transformative techno loops and spacious open hi-hats. Larry’s sophisticated production shines through here with a perfectly crafted techno track that will bring vibe to any heated dance floor.

‘Brainwashing’ follows up the titled track with a more subtle but driving groove with distorted, planetary elements that transmute listeners into a dystopian, robotic frame of mind.

‘Synaptic Connections’ closes out the EP in raw, seasoned style with funky, galactic arpeggiations and an animated sub bass. All three tracks are lively, vibey and will blaze dancefloors into the cosmos.

A few months have passed since Larry Cadge released new tracks. After remixing Gunnar Stiller and Ray Okpara’s tunes, Larry’s back with another pumping release titled “Vivian’s Kiss”. On this release Larry makes a tribute to the famous movie where the pretty Vivian sings while she is having a bath. 

The original mix is made up of highly infectious drums and a rolling baseline, with some vocal phrases by the beautiful Vivian. The atmosphere in the breakdowns becomes very chilled, without ever becoming cheesy or too melodic for the underground style. The dub mix trusts on nothing more than rhythmic drums, with a deep and stubby bass taking care of the lower frequency space, stripping down the track and keeping it to a strictly underground mood. 
Larry’s no newbie to the electronic music scene, and he proved bringing his fresh and distinctive sound on labels like Noir, Kling Klong and Great Stuff, and being followed by over 18000 music fans. 

Based in London but now operating on a global level - Smiley Fingers are an independent House and Techno record label that are pushing an extensive line of highly rated producers that are looking to fill the world with good vibes using nothing more than diverse talents in music production. With the likes of Larry on board and a fine taste for A&R you can bet on the imprint being around for the long haul.
