Troll's Reel (ET Again)

When I heard Appalachian fiddler Bruce Greene play Throw 'Round Your Calico, it sounded quite Scottish to me -- and somewhat familiar. I finally figured out that the melody bears a resemblance to the Scottish ballad Johnny Faa, so I have put the two tunes together here. I based my version of Johnny Faa on the one in James Oswald’s Caledonian Pocket Companion, Book 7 (1760).

Adina

A waltz for Dad (John Dunlay) on his 80th birthday. I composed it in the key of G for fiddle, but later found I could play it on harmonica using a regular-D plus a low-D instrument. This gives it more of the French Café style I was going for.

Susitna (Sleeping Lady)

A traditional tune from Niel Gow's Complete Repository, Part Third (Edinburgh, 1806). There it is written in standard tuning, but I played it on the fiddle in AEAC#, since some of the tunes descended from or related to Drunk and Dry are traditionally played in that tuning: Rye Whiskey, Drunkard's Hiccups, Jack of Diamonds (from the American South). Drunk and Dry is also related to the Scottish melodies Earl Douglas' Lament, Farewell to Tarwathie, and others.

Being a bit of a perfectionist, I tend to fuss endlessly over anything I create, including tunes. Master tunesmith Larry Unger suggested I give myself a ten-minute limit and simply write down whatever came to mind. So I did. Sure enough, a tune happened! Since I had just spent a year laying out and editing Larry's tunebook Further Adventures, my tune also contains characteristics of some of his compositions. Music in, similar music out.
