'What else is out there?' DJ Set

To feel the future is to feel the fall into time.

Like a kind of transcendental whiplash, the past leans in to furnish the present with a set of concrete forms and withering terms, whilst the halo of possibility on the crown of the moment makes speculation a speed-test for computing what comes next. As a vessel for abstract dynamics, the human organism knows what it is to be dizzy, to feel vertigo as a matter of being contained by our experience of space and time.

For the fourth instalment in Tresor's 'Kern' mix series, DJ Stingray presents a device for decoding time in all directions, a sonic prism that refracts our senses into auxiliary components of a total future-rush.

With a far-reaching selection that has been worked into his own unique form, DJ Stingray wraps our vertigo around a gritty pneumatic bump with high-velocity swing. His mixing style, prepared for hostile engagements as it is, throttles techno into counter-gravity forces. Wading through a specialised cross-section of Detroit's own dance-floor contagions as well as the contaminated feedback signals from across the global aqua plains, the mix can be summed up in just one word: hectic.

Raw, caustic, synthetic rhythm-code pumps frenzy itself through a cascading geothermal fog. Never giving away the cryptographic keys, DJ Stingray works you harder than your heart, adapting your biology to a fractal timeline of viscous systems.

Discovery, or uncovering, has to do with what already exists actually or virtually; it is therefore certain to happen sooner or later with enough sweat in the club. And as Kern Volume 4 attests to, DJ Stingray has the access codes and the stealth sense to make a place of a space, and to let it fall into time.

Accompanying the mix is a set of two records. The leading manoeuvre comes from the collaborative efforts of DJ Stingray and Heinrich Mueller under the name NRSB-11. Seven more pieces of the covert assault make up the release.

The product of a songwriting duo in the rich tradition of Tiga/Hulkkonen and Tiga/McCartney, “Stay Cool" marks a return of sorts to the classic Tiga sound, which is now the modern Tiga & Clarian sound. The kinda-underground acid techno grooves and magnanimously biting lyrics paint a picture so contemporary it threatens to make you live in the moment for the rest of your life.

What began organically with Clarian contributing material and production to Tiga’s 2016 No Fantasy Required LP has evolved into a contractually-mandated partnership. Having already worked with the likes of Jamie Principle, Felix Da Housecat and Guy Gerber, the Montreal-born musician is no stranger to “the hot collab," but was still taken aback by the rigorously enforced freedom he enjoyed during the "Stay Cool” sessions. “Tiga will be the first to tell you he has no ego in the studio, and in my experience that is the absolute truth,” says Clarian. “Every idea I have, every part I write, we split the credit right down the middle.”

“Stay Cool” is a real-time disintegration of the boundaries between Tiga’s public passion for music and his private obsession with digital entertainment currencies like Quarthonium Bronze and LavaBucks. “It occurred to me that what I could not stop myself from doing - typing 'HOLD YOUR POSITION' over and over in my crypto group chat - also served as an apt illustration of my heroic lifelong wrestling match with the idea of cool. And this epiphany has opened up my experience into a 360-degree panorama of creative possibility,” enthuses Tiga. “Soon, I'll be haggling over blueberries at the farmer’s market and Clarian will instantly turn in into the sound of the summer, whether you like it or you love it."

"You’re So Special” emerged from the songwriting team sitting around the drum machine in shirtsleeves with a pot of piping-hot coffee, waiting for piping-hot inspiration to strike. The lyrics ably grapple with the now, openly wondering about the direction of bleeding-edge compassion. “You see it everywhere, from airport bookstores stocked with variations on The Art of Not Giving a Fuck to airline pilots taking time off to work on themselves mid-flight,” hectors Tiga, wagging his finger for needed emphasis. “I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but what I also don’t pretend to have is patience for those who pretend to do.”

Man nehme sich einen Tag etwas Zeit, putze ihn ganz sauber von Bitterkeit, Geiz und Pedanterie und zerlege jede Stunde in 60 Teile, so dass der Vorrat genau für eine Ton Terrine reicht.

Es wird jedes Stück einzeln angerichtet aus einem Teil Arbeit und zwei Teilen Frohsinn und Humor.

Man füge drei gehäufte Esslöffel Optimismus hinzu, einen Teelöffel Toleranz, ein Körnchen Ironie und eine Prise Takt. Dann wird die Masse sehr reichlich mit Liebe übergossen.

Das fertige Gericht schmücke man mit Sträußchen kleiner Aufmerksamkeiten und serviere es täglich mit Heiterkeit und mit einer guten, erquickenden Tasse Kaffee.

“This EP was made after I realised that what inspired me most was to combine my love of electronic music with the music I enjoy outside of the club. I decided to collaborate with friends from a couple of my favourite bands, including Fay Milton (Savages) who provides live drums on Motorik Bush Doof Musik and Taigen Kawabe (Bo Ningen) who performs on I Never Cared That Much For Jungle. For me, having live instrumentation on the EP adds an extra depth to the tracks & has given me a vision of how to I’d like future releases to sound. 

My fave track off the EP, Growing Up With Muscle Cars, is an homage to my step dad who repairs and restores old muscle cars. He also used to take me to the drags in my hometown when I was little. We would push the race cars out onto the track. Some of my favourite memz as a lil kid.”

In the afterglow of rave’s white heat, the mid-90s were a period of going as far out in all directions as possible – and @Luke-Slater’s The 7th Plain tracks were certainly about exploration of the deep space of the imagination. Cosmic, analogue, orchestrated, they still represent some of the most emotionally intense music ever to come out of the techno realm. Whether built on percussive frameworks or sweeping nebulas of dissipated sound, Slater’s synthesizers still sing space-travelers’ tales compellingly and beautifully.

‘Chronicles III’ is made up solely of music from the General Production Recordings label catalogue and stylistically skews less toward percussive techno-funk and more toward free-form broken rhythms – though tracks such as “Lost”, “Time Melts” or “Millentum” stand strong as hybrid pillars of both.

Lars Landen (TWINTOWN / Marie22 Komplex)

Als Kind langjähriger Musiker stand dem damals 14-jährigen Saarbrücker nicht nur eine genreumfassende Plattensammlung, sondern auch ein Keller voller Instrumente zur Verfügung. Für seine „musikalische Früherziehung“ reichte Lars der Gang in den Proberaum seiner Eltern. Nach ein paar Jahren Klavierunterricht landete er am Schlagzeug seines Vaters.
Schnell war klar, dass seine Affinität zum Trommeln in der elektronischen Musik seinen Platz zum Ausleben findet. 

2013 traf er während der Sommerresidenz am Saarbrücker Schloss auf das Künstlerkollektiv Marie22 Komplex.
Alte Generation prallt auf junges ambitioniertes Talent. Einer Symbiose stand von nun an nichts mehr im Weg. Das mittlerweile verschollene „Römerkastell“, welches sich seinerzeit zur Techno & House-Hochburg des Saarlandes entwickelte, bot ihm die ideale Bühne für seinen modernen und doch zeitlosen Sound. 
2015 legte Lars im Rahmen der Marie22 Komplex Party „Freunde, Groove & Liebe“ auf.
Im Dezember folgte auf dieses DJ-Debüt dann ein Remix des Tracks „Raining for Ages“ von dem Berliner Duo „Techno Frühstück“ (Label TWINTOWN, Saarbrücken).
Weiter ging es dann im April 2016 mit Lars’ zweitem Remix für das Ambient-Kollektiv „No Accident In Paradise“ mit dem  Track „Dawka“, der bereits 2014 auf dem Label „Freude am Tanzen“ erschienen ist.   Parallel arbeitete Lars auch an seinem ersten eigenen musikalischen Output wobei unter anderem die 2-Track EP „Amont Aval“ entstand. Während sich Lars’ ganz eigener Sound bereits in seiner Plattensammlung widerspiegelt zeigen auch seine Produktionen in welches Universum er seine Zuhörer bewegen will. Die Musik ist meist eine Gratwanderung zwischen Techno, Ambient und House sodass sich keine Produktion in ein bestimmtes Genre stecken lässt.
