Jonathan Howard MD joins me to discuss his timely book, 'We Want Them Infected: How the Failed Quest for Herd Immunity Led Doctors to Embrace the Anti-Vaccine Movement and Blinded Americans to the Threat of COVID', published by Redhawk Publications.

As much as Jonathan Howard’s book is a scathing examination of how various very influential and contrarian doctors misled the US public about the coronavirus pandemic, it is also a historical document. By meticulously, carefully, and thoroughly quoting countless social media posts, statements, essays, op-eds, and interviews from certain highly accredited doctors, Dr. Howard compares their claims to actual reality as the virus began to rip through the population. Over and over again, these outspoken figures made bold and inaccurate claims that the pandemic was just about to end; herd immunity was just around the corner; the worst of the plague had already past; children were unaffected; and so on. Over and over again, these contrarian figures were proven wrong. And yet, despite overwhelming evidence, they still maintain their professional status and accreditation to this day, seemingly unhindered—professionally, at least—by the widespread consequences of their repeated false assumptions and claims.

In this interview, Dr. Howard goes through the timeline of some of the claims made by these individuals, elucidating the origins of various bits of misinformation that persist up to the present. He describes what the Great Barrington Declaration is and its significance, and how the dubious public health recommendations relayed through it made its way into the highest echelons of US political and executive power. We discuss how this contrarian view of public health is informed by far-right libertarian philosophy, and how it is animated by a negative conception of liberty. And finally, we conclude by Dr. Howard sharing his views on the value, or lack thereof, of debate with individuals this book highlights and critiques, and how these media-trained, eloquent, and Gish galloping contrarian figures thrive in a media environment that allows their false claims to go largely unchallenged, and what that portends for our response to present and future public health emergencies.

Dr. Jonathan Howard is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health and the Chief of Neurology at Bellevue Hospital. He is the author of 'Cognitive Errors and Diagnostic Mistakes: A Case-Based Guide to Critical Thinking in Medicine' as well as several textbooks in neurology. He has been interested in vaccines long before the pandemic.

Acclaimed author John Vaillant joins me to discuss Fire Weather: The Making of a Beast, a masterfully written chronicle of the destructive power of fire in the twenty-first century.

Fire Weather is an astounding chronicle of the boreal fire that swept through Fort McMurray, Alberta in May 2016. Over the course of 24 hours, the nearly 90,000 residents of this modern-day bitumen subarctic boom town evacuated, escaping the out of control fire as it eviscerated everything in its path. Vaillant zooms in close, guiding us through the decisions made that day as the fire raced into the city, made by residents and authorities alike as catastrophe unfolded. He expands the story to situate Fort Mac as a nexus point in the larger settler colonial history of Canada and its inextricable relationship with the fossil fuel industry and extractive capitalism, all situated within our present paradigm of ecological crisis, climate change, and 21st century fire.

Professor and historian Rashid Khalidi joins me to discuss his book The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017.  Professor Khalidi weaves his multigenerational familial roots to historic Palestine with decades of academic scholarship to present a narrative that plainly addresses the so-called Israel-Palestine conflict for what it is. He addresses how Palestinian identity was catalyzed and formed over the past century, as well as the responsibility foreign interests have—historically and presently—in perpetuating the ongoing genocidal campaign in Gaza.

Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies. He received his B.A. from Yale University in 1970, and his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1974. He has taught at the Lebanese University, the American University of Beirut, Georgetown University, and at the University of Chicago. He is past President of the Middle East Studies Association, and the co-editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies. With full, unyielding participation, the government of the United States is aiding the State of Israel in its months’ long bombardment of the population of Gaza, and stepping up its already horrific treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories. As of the recording of this introduction, the official death toll in Gaza has reached over 20,000 according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, with over 8,000 described as “missing,” since the IDF’s campaign began following the events of October 7th. While this campaign is extraordinary, even compared to previous military incursions into Gaza, it is part of a larger project that has been ongoing for over a century.

Long Covid Action Project [LCAP] activists Stephanie and Linda, along with journalist and LCAP founder Joshua Pribanic, join me in this impromptu interview to discuss the recent direct action Linda and Stephanie participated in at the Senate HELP Committee Hearing on January 18, ostensibly held to address the ongoing and growing Long Covid crisis in the United States.

This is the first in an ongoing series of interviews done in collaboration with journalist and LCAP founder and activist Joshua Pribanic to address the realities of what Long Covid is, and the action needed to address this issue comprehensively.

“There is not a single face of Long Covid. Long Covid can be people in their prime, of working age. It can be people a little bit older. It could be people without any preexisting health conditions. It doesn’t discriminate in terms of who it strikes, and I think Congress needs to know that. It’s not the sick and the weak. It’s not middle-aged women only. It’s everybody. Climate science communicators like Eliot Jacobson have taken it upon themselves to gather numerous points of data and present it in easy to comprehend graphs and descriptions. It becomes clear what the trends show, and how rapidly the habitability of the planet is disintegrating. The stresses of global heating, and broader attacks on the living systems of the earth, are propelling the sixth mass extinction event forward and outward at neck breaking speed. For most days this past year, it has been difficult to keep up with all the information coming in, but in many ways, Jacobson’s comprehensive data sets and analysis of broader climate trends gives us a grounded view of where we are in all of this, and what it portends in the years to come.

In light of this reality, how do we position ourselves? How do we understand ourselves? How do we cope? How do we live? What the hell do we do? Great and difficult questions bear down on us, and if contemplated enough, we do not necessarily arrive at clear solutions. The set of problems producing climate disruption are, in fact, a predicament, one we will not be able to extricate ourselves from. Eliot Jacobson and I, in this hour together, discuss this predicament within that framing, discussing where hope fits in this—if it even fits at all.

Fiction, as Margaret Killjoy points to in this interview, isn’t good at providing blueprints, it’s about finding the aspiration of what to look forward to; fiction is better at asking questions than providing answers. A good piece of creative storytelling can make the reader feel what it’s like to live in the “ambiguous utopia” of LeGuin’s The Dispossessed or Killjoy’s A Country of Ghosts, and take us to a place that may be difficult for us to imagine existing otherwise, as much as we may long for it. Such a creative exercise can help us see what subtle and complex problems may arise in such a situation, hence the ambiguity of the “ambiguous utopia.”

In 2016, Chris began concurrently working in and writing about the tourism industry, founding Oaxaca Profundo, a deep learning organization focused on food culture and radical hospitality. In 2021, alongside friends and strangers, he organized and launched the End of Tourism Podcast. He is the author of a book of poetry entitled the Black Braid of Memory, as well as forthcoming books on the psychedelic culture, the unauthorized history of tourism, and radical hospitality. Finally, he is a student of all things chocolate and cacao-related.

The Jail is Everywhere: Fighting the New Geography of Mass Incarceration is edited by Lydia Pelot-Hobbs, Jack Norton, and Judah Schept, with contributions by, and interviews with, numerous anti-jail organizers across the United States. It was published through Verso Books.

Lydia Pelot-Hobbs is an Assistant Professor of Geography and African American & Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky, and author of Prison Capital: Mass Incarceration and Struggles for Abolition Democracy in Louisiana.

Jack Norton is Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Governors State University, and was a senior research associate at the Vera Institute of Justice. He conducted research for the In Our Backyards initiative and investigated how counties across the United States use their local jails.

Chris Christou joins me in this winding discussion to explore the subjects and themes raised in his phenomenal podcast, The End of Tourism, described as “a project about the deep causes and consequences of tourism, wanderlust, spectacle, exile,” and “an invitation into the local resistance and resilience movements in the face of each of these things.” In my discussion with him, Chris reflects on the historical moment he chose to begin this project: during the earliest waves of the global pandemic, at a time when global tourism effectively collapsed.

“[Locals] are also now experiencing this sense of, what is home? Where is my home? Am I a homeless person within a place that apparently has all this culture? So, that’s arrived, and that’s there. Part of the dilemma for local people, that largely goes unnoticed, is that it’s not new. It’s not five years old. It’s been around for a while, and it’s just now becoming noticeable to people, and because of the cathartic short-term memory of twenty-first century society, culture, or people, there is an unwillingness and inability to recognize what’s gone unrecognized. And I think that in order to understand the patterns in all this and the way the light shines off that prism, and see what’s to come, we have to be able to understand what we couldn’t see 10 or 20 years ago, and understand why we couldn’t see it. So, suddenly, it’s all here; the dilemmas are in our face now, but nobody is willing to ask how it got this way because then they might actually be implicated in how it came to be, and then they might actually be responsible. And I don’t mean guilty; I’m not talking about guilt. I’m talking about our ability to respond to what’s happened and what’s to come.”

Chris Christou is a writer, educational curator, and activist. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he moved to Oaxaca, Mexico in 2015 after a decade of delirious wanderlust. In 2016, Chris began concurrently working in and writing about the tourism industry, founding Oaxaca Profundo, a deep learning organization focused on food culture and radical hospitality. In 2021, alongside friends and strangers, he organized and launched the End of Tourism Podcast. He is the author of a book of poetry entitled the Black Braid of Memory, as well as forthcoming books on the psychedelic culture, the unauthorized history of tourism, and radical hospitality. Finally, he is a student of all things chocolate and cacao-related.
