“This piece was initially created back in 2018 as a way to stretch and warm my fingers up before playing,” says Aaron. “I premiered it live at a show with the Lydian Collective Trio (comprising Aaron, drummer Sophie Alloway and bassist Ida Hollis) at Cadogan Hall as a fun solo ‘party piece’ to start the second set.” 

What began life as a series of arpeggios developed into a manic roller-coaster of a composition, which opens with quick, unrelenting piano that mellows beautifully into a bassy Afro-beat groove in the mid-section, punctuated by free-flow improvised solos. 

FRENETICS draws inspiration from the quirky compositions of Frank Zappa, as well as the playful and bright musical style of Japanese composer Hiromi Uehara. Featuring the musical talents of Sophie Alloway (Lydian Collective’s drummer), as well as Simon Joyner on trumpet and Michael Underwood on flute and saxophone, this is the last release from THE LASZLO PROJECT’S forthcoming EP.

Following up from the the darker, more experimental Level Five Stage One, the eclectic composer and producer Laszlo returns to a more organic sound, exploring some new compositional techniques with his latest EP: Turning Tide.

The four-track offering represents a time of progression and moving forward for the London-based artist. The introductory title track eases us in with abstract, minimal textures, and the subsequent brooding tones of Loops and Limbo Lullaby explore feelings of uncertainty before progressing into the assured grooves and soaring melodies of the concluding finale: Cartoon Hero, a colourful and nostalgic epic.﻿


Whist Turning Tide echoes the distinctive organic style of Radial Nerve, the use of synthesisers and electric guitars gives the EP its own signature sound. As a transition between the brooding minimalism of Level Five Stage One and the lighter hearted roots of Radial Nerve, Turning Tide perhaps gives us a taste of what’s to come!

Laszlo - Turning Tide - Cartoon Hero

‘Kyoto Rain’ is inspired by the sound of Japanese composers such as Joe Hisashi (who famously created the music for the beautiful Studio Ghibli films) and Nobuo Uematsu (composer of the Final Fantasy video game series) and Hiromi Uehara. 

The resulting composition is gently reflective, with a swelling sense of fantasy and mysticism. The ascending piano arpeggios represent the ‘pitter patter’ sound of the rain on the window - a musical onomatopoeia - looking out upon a gradually-building monsoon. The melody begins with the haunting sound of overlapping flugelhorn parts (played by Simon Joyner), and is later joined by a crescendo of vocals (Phoebe Wright-Spinks) and flute (Michael Underwood). 

In the wake of success with Aaron’s band Lydian Collective, The Laszlo Project rebooted in 2020 after a 5 year hiatus with the ‘Press Start’ EP. With more than 1.8 million Spotify streams already, The Laszlo Project’s music can be found on playlists across a diverse range of genres from jazz fusion to world, electro and chill-step. The forthcoming EP, of which ‘Kyoto Rain’ is the debut single, continues a decades-long experimentation in sound from a composer who never fails to delight and beguile.

Laszlo (aka Aaron Wheeler) is a composer / producer, multi-instrumentalist and
founder of the 4-piece jazz funk fusion band, Lydian Collective.

Aaron has released three albums under the name Laszlo: Radial Nerve
(2011), Level Five Stage One(2013), and Cartoon Hero(2015). These releases have created an international following and have generated over 1.4 million Spotify streams, as well as hundreds of thousands of YouTube views and plays on BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, and Radio 3 - with support from tastemakers such as Giles Peterson, Nick Luscombe, Oliver Jones, and Tom Robinson.
