This month Girasol invites Xela aka Alex Coppola, Philadelphia-based selector, record collector and artist. His project @islandtimeradio is a curatorial platform for international and diasporic music with a focus on Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also instigated the strongly recommended @late-feelings project. 

"This mix is proposed as a light-hearted excursion through some Latin pop, Compas, Disco, Soukous, Highlife, Brazilian Jazz with other bits mixed in. Put together with the idea of something to listen to while riding to the beach; a sun-tinged appetizer for the summer season."

This Sunday afternoon, festival closer set carries the energy from the prior DJs (Goose and Hosca who absolutely killed it) and then winds it all down in the second hour with some eclectic selections ... bringing a magical weekend to a close in typical RT style   

Big props to the wonderful crew at Biophilia for booking RT as the festival closer - it was an honour and a privilege to play music to such a magical group of people, and especially in such a beautiful surrounding of nature - what a vibe!

Various Artists - Five Years Lost (Continuous DJ-Mix by Mario Aureo)

The 13th mix in the H.H.A.S. series, and a special one indeed! This one comes from the mysterious Stockholm-duo Motormännen, who claims to make "information techno from a bygone Sweden, through a filter of retro-futuristic skepticism." The output smells of acid and pounding beats and also serves the purpose of delivering community information from the years 1976-1991. The videos that accompany their releases on Youtube are too an important part of their somewhat different but equally fantastic take on Swedish (all the vocal samples as well!) techno. The featured mix is their live set from The "Y+M presenterar: Noise01"-night, held Friday March 6th at Södra Teatern, Stockholm. Please enjoy, and get informed meanwhile.

I conceived this mix as a trip troughout Africa, or actually through some parts of her, who is for me the mother of all parties, like a sacred rainbow.
I like to see the different sonorities reverberating in the body. Each rhythm, each quality, resonating in our dances, waking them up. And to let each one act and open up the way to the infinite forms of celebration.
I like allowing it to happen, and I would like to invite you.

Most notably the fusion genre of Chutney, with Kaseko, Calypso, Disco, mixed in with odds and ends psych and devotional folk strands flowing throughout. Mood suited for a sunny day, enjoy :)

"For this mix, I really just tried to start with some of my favorite records that I’ve found in the last few months and build off that. The records span mid 80s to early 90s, and the mix hops around through different vibes and genres; lovers rock, dancehall, boogie, deep house, street soul, highlife, kwaito, soca, etc. Always aiming to keep it both deep and accessible, and of course build a sound around positivity, this time tinged with a little melancholy for the end of summer. Mixed live on an October night in my West philly apartment. Enjoy!"

He runs the bi-weekly radio series @islandtimeradio , concentrating on deep dives into on off-the-grid music from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and is also a frequent collaborator of @late-feelings blog.

"This mix started with the idea of bringing together some uptempo African tracks off records that I find really special, but for reasons relating to rhythm or sonic palette, haven't been able to find a home for in past projects, so stylistically/structurally it's a bit of different territory. It's mostly West African with a few exceptions, starting with a Baoulé song from Ivoirienne artist Mossia, then going into some highlife-fusion, soukous, afrodisco, zouglou, etc. Thanks Desert Island Disco for the invite and collaboration, as I'm a big fan of what you guys are doing. hope you all enjoy!"
