Death Drive - the feeling of intense malaise, of wanting everything to just stop, that often accompanies depression. The idea is that the mind has a drive towards a state of "ending" when it feels stuck, or unable to change its environment. This is NOT the same as suicidal ideation, to be clear.

Like my last piece, this song might not appear sad or depressing to you, though that was the energy I was trying to instill in it; I haven't yet been able to stave off my artistic sensibilities (brighter sounds, pops, glitches, bebop-like improv etc.) in the pursuit of the directed expression of a single idea, but that's art for you!

Thanks to BTS for the inspiration to do this lol. This was originally supposed to be a joke, but idk, I put a lot of work into it and it does have some serious holiday spirit so now I don't know what it is~

Additionally, what's featured here was my original concept artwork for death drive (with a little holiday remixing of its own), which I haven't had a chance to share up until now!

Sleigh Drive (Death Drive Holiday Remix)

Very excited to share "Texture 10-22", a DJ set I conceived months ago and finally performed for the WACK New York clothing brand launch event in Brooklyn, NY on April 22, 2022. 

This set focuses on presenting a variety of different textures, both tonal and non-tonal, across a variety of genres and artists through songs from the year 2010 through the present (hence the title). I've always loved out there, experimental, complex sounds, and from the dawn of popular EDM through today it's been really cool to see the diversity in popular electronic explode, with more and more artists implementing unique, experimental sounds and textures in their music. 

From Koan Sound moving from dubstep to creating lush percussive environments, to Flume and Vince Staples working with underground artists like SOPHIE, to Oneohtrix Point Never producing for the Weekend, to artists like G Jones and Tsuruda gaining widespread followings, i'm excited to see how electronic music continues to develop and change.  

For this set, I worked on involving myself a lot more with the mixing process, getting to know my DJ controller more intimately and interact more intentionally and musically (or non-musically, depending on your perspective) with the material as I'm playing it. Ultimately my goal is to use the controller as an instrument and combine it with other electronic sounds. This was my first step towards that goal.

1st track of 2021~ 

It's been a hard year, and at least for me, these past two months have been especially demoralizing. I don't usually write music based on my emotions, but this song came from an authentic place for me, one I find myself in periodically. If you're having a difficult time as well, I hope this song resonates with you somehow, and if it doesn't at least know you aren't alone.
