Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums.

Mark and DJ's roots are in R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel having played within the same gospel band for years. Both professional musicians, Mark began teaching Laura how to play bass in the summer of 2009. As such, Laura quickly developed a huge passion for the instrument and the aesthetic it brought to music she loved. Having worked studiously on developing her skills, both Mark and Laura were invited to tour with Ninja Tune's YPPAH supporting Bonobo across his 2010 American tour. 

The tour galvanised the two of them to start making music together more seriously, sowing the first seeds of Khruangbin. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - Khruangbin literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - the two took a trip to a barn deep in the Texas countryside and jammed for the entire weekend, developing a sound which was steeped the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration. Khruangbin was formed, with D.J. the natural go to for drums.

Having kept in touch, Bonobo included Khruangbin's 'A Calf Born In Winter' on his 2013 'Late Night Tales' compilation. In addition to increasing the Stateside following the band has built, the release has helped Khruangbin in topping both the US & UK 'Last FM' fastest growing artists whilst 'A Calf Born In Winter' continues to be one of the most popular single downloads from the compilation. The band recently signed to LNT offshoot Night Time Stories, with an album planned in 2015.

Twenty-one years after its initial release in 2002, Groove Armada’s seminal Another Late Night compilation gets a heavyweight vinyl reissue courtesy of longtime label collaborators Late Night Tales.

Boasting eighteen tracks lovingly selected by the esoteric cratediggers (including the duo’s uber-rare cover of ‘Fly Me To The Moon’), the 70-minute collection - hailed as a 'groovy concoction of cabaret music, cocktail house, old school funk and a bit of hip hop' by Resident Advisor - takes us on a journey through downtempo bliss via the occasional dance- floor filler and more than one opportunity for the listener to start shakin’ their ass. This ain't no normal nightmare, kid. This is Nightmares On Wax, aka DJ EASE, aka George Evelyn. Born under a bad sign, with lino in hand, Mr. Evelyn went forth into the world and breakdanced (brokedance?). It's what you did in the 80s when you were young, loved hip hop and couldn't rap for toffee. When house arrived they turned their clever hands to it. Bleeps and beats is what it was. That's what everyone said. But there was always a bit more than a bunch of bleeps to what Nightmares On Wax did. The north never really took the name very seriously (Sweet Exorcist even named their album Clonk as a pisstake). Then George flipped the script and went and did Smokers Delight, the beats not so much seminal as semolina: gloopy and slow and sweet and lovely.

And now we have this: a 2024 reissue of his seminal Late Night Tales compilation. Tom Scott's 'Sneakin' In The Back' — one of the most sampled beats in hip hop — makes an appearance in its full glory, while Quincy Jones, the inspiration for NOW's 'Nights Interlude', backs up the classics with ‘Listen (What It Is)’. Evelyn's hip hop sensibility is to the fore throughout and nowhere is this more evident than on ‘Intergalactic Throwdown' by former Freestylers' DJ, Mad Doctor X. And can we forget the sublime version of the Classic IV's 'Spooky' by darling Dusty? No, we can't. Finally — oh, finally! — there is the now-traditional cover version, with George serving up a soupy version of 'Brothers On The Slide' that gives a nod of respect to the original British funk soul brothers, Cymande.

An ocean of water has passed under the Zero 7 bridge since we originally issued this collection of music.

In 2002, when this was first issued, they’d recently been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for their brilliant debut album, Simple Things, as well as being a nominee for Best Newcomer at the 2002 BRIT Awards. Their third album, The Garden, was nominated for a Grammy in 2007.

Since then, Zero 7 have become an active touring live band, made some incredible music and judiciously chosen remixes, like Terry Callier’s ‘Love Theme From Spartacus’. Their old RAK studios colleague Nigel Godrich once told them, “Your great records become the Sistine Chapels of music in a sea of affordable accommodation”. It’s fair to say they’ve got a few Sistines under their belt.

The selection is compilation perfection – and you seem to agree. Such is the desirability of the original vinyl edition, it’s now selling for over a ton. You can expect to find the Stylistics’ soul classic, ‘People Make The World Go Round’ and the rare groove bomb produced by Roy Ayers, ‘You Can’t Turn Me Away’ by Sylvia Striplin. Don Blackman’s ‘Holding You, Loving You’ is included. This tune was sampled by Slum Village on ‘Go Ladies’ who also make an appearance here with ‘Jealousy’, as does Herbert’s boompty-boomp rub of M. Gainsbourg’s ‘Bonnie & Clyde’.

"For my cover version I chose this track by Yeasayer. The original is a  beautifully sad yet upbeat breakup song, strident and bright with synth lines cascading around a heartfelt vocal. I wanted to make it sound far more broken and fragile, so I re-played it on the piano, pitched it down, then mangled it quite heavily so it came out sort of wobbly and knackered sounding. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass-heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks, and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were the '60s and '70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock, and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used, and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound. 

“We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass-heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks, and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were the '60s and '70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock, and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used, and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound. 

“We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

Khruangbin - Two Fish and an Elephant

It’s San Francisco in 1966 and we’re lying in the long grass overlooking the bay realising that life might never get better than this. Same year, different location. We’re walking down St. Mark’s Place in New York towards the Dom, where the Velvet Underground are performing this very evening. Post-punk London: pop possibilities, psychedelic outcomes, unsteady futures. Connecticut 2004, a collegiate idyll and meeting point for Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser whose primordial wigouts are released under the name MGMT.

Lysergic mgmt diethylamide: this music is for those who know their Orange Sunshine from their Windowpane. Drenched in pop as much as psychedelia, they don’t need a map and compass to find the tunes. MGMT formed at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and after some indie activity soon caught the attention of Columbia who have so far released the first two albums, the aptly-named Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations. There have been Grammy nominations (and even a Grammy win for Justice’s remix of ‘’Electric Feel’), though these are mere fripperies in the face of Owsley Stanley and his pals.

Although their sound has morphed considerably over the first two LPs, their attitude has not. In ‘Song For Dan Treacy’, they show their affection for a certain type of British songwriter (Treacy’s band TV Personalities are included here), while Congratulations’ producer Peter Kember is a former member of the Spacemen 3, the best psychedelic band ever to come from Rugby – who also figure on this very compilation with the delightful ‘Lord Can You Hear Me’.

They are firstly fans of other people’s records, those MGMT boys. You can tell by the impressive depth of their selections and by how sympathetic this music sounds when blended together. We can’t overlook the tremendous contributions of the English psych aristocracy hereabouts. There is the Droolian himself Julian Cope whose song, ‘Laughing Boy’, is taken from his finest hour Fried. Then there’s the unbearably cultish Felt, featuring the wonderful Lawrence Hayward, with ‘Red Indians’ and Vini Reilly (aka Durutti Column) with the slinky ‘For Belgian Friends’. If Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers and the Singing Policeman had been present, the eccentrics of Great Britain Society would have had a quorum.

But that is not all. Oh no. That is not all… There’s the other side of the pond, too. The Grace Slick-led Great Society’s ‘Love You Girl’ and Suicide’s Martin Rev who weighs in with the magnificently batty ‘Sparks’ from 2000’s Strangeworld. But then, just when you think you’ve get them all figured they go and throw rockabilly hero Charlie Feathers into the ring. To top it all, there’s also their reading of Bauhaus’ uncharacteristically beautiful ‘All We Ever Wanted Was Everything’ for our now traditional Late night Tales cover version. TKO MGMT.

Gently remove your I Was Lord Kitchener’s Valet army uniform. Take a sip of green tea, lie back on the chaise longue and wait for the magic carpet to arrive. Let’s take a trip.

For Record Store Day 2016, Khruangbin present two new versions of People Everywhere (Still Alive) one of the standout tracks from their 2015 album The Universe Smiles Upon You. First up Khruangbin deliver a beautiful (and much requested) extended version which sees the band develop and refine the track to lengthened perfection. Next in line emerging artist Vuelo works his dub magic, bringing some bass to the occasion and in doing so creating a worthy soundtrack to a beach festival sunrise. 

This imaginative package from Khruangbin brings a new and unique element to their work. Taking the People Everywhere theme, the band's artistic flair and their interest in design, Khruangbin have invited artists everywhere to contribute to this unusual release. Artists taking part are asked to design a template of the People Everywhere paperchain inlay which will be included in each copy sold and in which the vinyl will rest. Using People Everywhere as inspiration, Artists submit their work for selection via a website set up by the band to house the project. All submissions will appear on the website with information about each artist and the chosen designs will be reproduced, die-cut, and distributed among the physical vinyl releases for Record Store Day. Purchasers of the vinyl will own one of a very limited number containing the same design. This idea reaches out across the globe, using music and art to bring together People Everywhere for this one-off project. 

Sharing their first recordings, Bonobo included Khruangbin's ‘A Calf Born In Winter’ on his 2013 Late Night Tales compilation. Subsequently signed to Late Night Tales offshoot Night Time Stories, ‘A Calf Born In Winter’ was released as a single in May 2014, four-track EP ‘The Infamous Bill’ followed in October, with covers EP ‘History Of Flight’ on Record Store Day 2015. Their debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was released in November 2015 to widespread acclaim. 2016 is set to be an important year for the band and their rising profile with a series of international live dates planned including Festivals in the UK, Europe, and the US, SXSW, and out on the road this May with Father John Misty supporting on his UK and European tour.

"Before Jon became the world-famous and respected composer he is today I had the privilege of doing some sessions with him. This is something that we started 8 or 9 years ago and the original idea was less than 90 seconds long. I always loved the feeling it gave me so I decided to develop it for this album as I felt it fitted into what I was trying to say. The words came last. This extract was shown to me by my friend (and one of Belfast’s finest actors), Lalor Roddy because he thought it had a lot in common with a short film I directed called ‘I AM HERE‘, which deals with family and reconnection in the afterworld. It comes from a book called AENEID VI, which was the last work Seamus Heaney translated before he passed; which made it even more special as I consider this to be a very Northern Irish-themed album. When I first read it I was stunned by the similarities and wrote a letter to Mick Heaney (Seamus Heaney’s son) asking for permission. The Heaney family gave me permission (which I am forever grateful for) and the next step was securing the voice of another Northern Irish great, Stephen Rea. A huge thank you to Stephen and the Heaney family for helping me make this happen. It was a perfect way to finish this album." - David Holmes

The limited-edition signed Blu-Ray enables fans who missed the two record-sell-out shows in May to catch up with the lucky ones who witnessed Sasha’s towering presence dominating centre stage at his live performance debut. 

Sasha’s focus on the future and fresh worlds to conquer made it unlikely he’d revisit his seminal cut, which electrified dancefloors in 1999 and has been spoken of with awe ever since. So he began a seemingly new piece on stage, which then revealed itself to be a special new rework, bringing the stunned audience to their feet in a goosebump-inducing joyful finale. 

"From day one everyone was like “We’ve got to do Xpander!"” Sasha says. "Of course, it was the scariest thing to tackle because it was such a big old record. We slowed it right down, put this really teasing intro in it that sounded very [Steve] Reich-ian. The moment that it opened up and the riff came in was a really special moment at the Barbican."

The rework rounded off Sasha’s live interpretation of his highly-acclaimed Scene Delete album on the eminent Late Night Tales label along with tracks from his back catalogue, on keyboards and accompanied by vocalists, band and string ensemble. 

The Blu-Ray package includes the full show (plus interviews with several of the musicians and singers, including Charlie May and Dave Gardner), along with two audio CDs for both halves of the show and a high-quality audio download. Each booklet is individually numbered and personally signed by Sasha. 

"It was a mountain to climb. The last few days of rehearsals, it just got tighter and tighter. It went from this frantic atmosphere a month before the show, everyone panicking, to suddenly everyone going, “Oh this is working, it’s going to be great!” It achieved everything and more by doing it the way we did. In terms of a personal achievement, the fact that I’ve learned to play again is such an important part of this for me. The new edition of Late Night Tales journeys to Scandinavia to invite Norwegian duo Röyksopp to delve through their record collection. Their Late Night Tales mix is eclectic, diverse and wonderful. Sliding from light folk to widescreen ambience to experimental rock to prog-pop (seasoned with the occasional guilty pleasure); it’s all in the spirit of the night.

Following the exclusive introduction track 'Daddy's Groove', Rare Bird's beautiful 1975 B-side'Passing Through' then leads into Australian supergroup Little River Band. The first of several delicate folk moments, it's joined by the ever soulful John Martyn. There's a strong representation of alternative European sounds. Röyksopp mine deep and wide to unearth the rare and unusual German psych-pop of Richard Schneider Jnr (featuring none other than Can's Jaki Leibezeit on drums), France's unique F.R. David and the new age melodies of Switzerland's Andreas Vollenweider - it's pop Jim, but not as we know it. There are also the more familiar names of XTC and Thomas Dolby, as well as Röyksopp's exclusive cover of Depeche Mode's 'Ice Machine' and brand new track opening Daddys Groove. The music draws to a close with goth-dream-pop 4AD founders The Mortal Coil's Emmylou Harris cover 'Till I Can Gain Control Again'; blending into a cinematic moment from German electronic avant-garde band Popol Vuh, contributing to the soundtrack of Werner Herzog's 1972 movie Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The second part of the Benedict Cumberbatch narrated story 'Flat of Angles' closes time on this coolly individual edition of Late Night Tales.
