THE ROUGH GUIDE TO LATIN DANCE

Latin American is a region defined by years of change and social upheaval. Today, as ever, dance is a potent identifier and method of cultural expression. This Rough Guide invites you to take to your tango, roll out your rumba and set your salsa sizzling with the hottest sounds from the likes of Argentinean duo Mas Alla, Martinican melody-maker Dede Saint-Prix and Brazilian sambista Ruivao.

Kicking off the album with a swinging salsa, Virginia-based experimenters Bio Ritmo lay down a winding keys riff layered atop with the blasts of a hearty horn section and sweetly delivered male vocals. A few tracks in we are treated to ‘Oran Oran’ by Maurice El Medioni and Roberto Rodriguez. El Medioni hails from Algeria and recycles his varying influences (from American boogie-woogie to rai) delicately and dextrously on the piano. Here El Medioni is accompanied by Cuban percussionist Rodriguez and together the pair create a distinct Afro-Latin groove.

Colombiafrica reverberate their champeta straight from the streets of Colombia. A powder-keg of Colombian rhythms brewed together with Congolese soukous, Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian Afro-beat – this band offer a riotous take on contemporary street dance. Staying in Colombia but striking back through the decades, the vintage track ‘Ocho Dias’ by Los Corraleros De Majagual is a slinky throw-back to cumbia done big-band style. Harmonized horns call and respond to a caramel-smooth choir and lead male voice.

‘A Zero Por Hora’ is contributed by Brazilian singer Vitor Ramil. Teaming up with Rio-born Marcos Suzano, the pair present their hope for the future of samba; acoustic instruments riffing on traditional dance figures nestle alongside textural ambient electronics.

Watching Latin dance is like watching a living history lesson played out, every stamp and flounce encapsulating centuries of change in the region. From the circle dances of the Taino Indians, to European set-dances introduced by Columbus and his compadres, via complicated African cross-rhythms introduced during the dreaded slave trade, not forgetting jubilant Creole carnivals and contemporary urban street styles – dance is Latin Americas living history. The country that produces pianists of the genius of Martha Argerich might never produce anyone like her, but has also bred other musicians—and indeed, pianists—of considerable talent for composition, technique and creativity. One of these is the pianist behind some of the greatest groups of Astor Piazzolla: Pablo Ziegler. Now a solo artist, Mr. Ziegler may never be compared to Ms. Argerich who is a legend in the whole world of music. However, while Mr. Ziegler is not nearly reached that stellar stature, he certainly stakes his claim to being one of the finest pianists that Argentina has produced in the world of Nuevo tango and very likely in jazz as well—the two worlds he bestrides like a proverbial colossus, criss-crossing those two world with a stunning promethean presence as he voices music that is rich in the metaphor of both musical languages. His is a singular voice, but Mr. Ziegler appears to have been shaped equally by Aquiles Delle Vigne as well as Thelonious Monk. Each musician has bestowed upon him a very special aspect. From Mr. Monk he gets the unique characteristic of stabbing at notes with sharp, percussive effect that sometimes gives the impression that he treats the ivories as cymbals, which in turn, enables Mr. Ziegler to obtain a radiant, metallic sound. From Mr. Delle Vigne, Mr. Ziegler long-since absorbed a certain gentility, which over a period of time—and with the persistent kneading of Mr. Piazzolla—he has made his own, using a kind of diaphanous approach as if conducting rather than playing notes and phrases, in the grand manner.

It's the 5th track of the album "The Music of Marlon Simon and The Nagual Spirits", released in 1998 on the K-Jazz Productions label. It was Marlon Simon's first recording as a bandleader. This track features Edward Simon on piano, John Benítez on bass, Roberto Quintero on congas and Marlon Simon on drum set, timbales and other percussion. "The Music of Marlon Simon and The Nagual Spirits" has been re-released on August 15, 2020. Its music sounds as fresh and hip as if it had been recently recorded.
