Venezuela's Supreme Court thrust that country back into the limelight this week, deciding there will be no appeal to the close election results of spring's controversial elections. This week, “Latin Pulse” uses that decision to return to Venezuelan politics.  The program delves into voter fraud and coercion in Venezuela.  The program also looks at the aftereffects of the Edward Snowden affair and what it has meant to the evolving the diplomatic context in Latin America. Venezuelan Court Rejects Election Appeal & the Snowden Affair (Lp8092013)

This week, "Latin Pulse" shines a light on the situation for the media in Latin America and threats to free speech. The program looks at how indigenous groups in Guatemala are disenfranchised when it comes to running public media outlets. Death and resurrection are the twin themes this week on Latin Pulse.  The theme of resurrection is provided just ahead of the Easter season through an examination of the growth of evangelical Protestantism throughout Latin America. Cracking Down on Protests in Venezuela & Police Corruption in El Salvador (Lp5162014)

The historical and political insights included in this program prove to be useful, even after almost three years since they were broadcast online.)

Trade and economics take center stage on Latin Pulse this week, after the U.S. Congress passed free trade legislation with two Latin American countries and South Korea. This was the most significant trade legislation agreed to by Congress in 17 years. The program looks at the new competition for trade the U.S. faces in Latin America from China and considers if Latin America will become a front in the competition between these two global powers. Also, the program includes the second part of a longer interview reviewing free speech and media issues in the region in the run-up to elections in many parts of Latin America.

This week, Latin Pulse focuses on Argentina's debt crisis. A federal judge in the U.S. is holding Argentina in contempt for failing to come up with a plan that satisfies all of its creditors from a default in 2001.  The U.S. Supreme Court ruled it would not review the case, thus upholding the lower court decisions on the bond repayments.  That decision triggered a second default.  This case holds implications not only for Argentina's economic future, but for the position of financial outlets in New York. This week's news segment covers the victory claims of President Evo Morales in Bolivia.
