When I awoke, so clear in my mind,
The dream gathering, so perfectly defined.
A party in the woods, everybody had come
And overhead, the banner said, ‘The Moon is a Drum’

  Under starry skies above

  And we fill our hearts with love

And the DJ’s on a roll mixing techno and soul
Psychedelic drum and bass, and rock and roll
Everyone’s smiling, and dancing around,
Bobbing and a jigging to that transcendental sound!

The last thing I remember was singing this song
We were jamming round the fire, beneath the silver gong
And in a meditative flow, it rolled off your tongue,
“If saucepan-lids are cymbals, then the moon is a drum…”

let’s take a little ride into the countryside
Round the fire in the forest 
Or a speaker in the glade
Dancing to the honest moonlight serenade

The Moon is a Drum

Inspired by Proposition 114 that approved the reintroduction of gray wolves in Colorado, Colorado Sky tells the story of a wolf cub named Sky who returns home. Sky struggles to adjust to living in Colorado but eventually learns to adapt to his new world, encouraged by his mother Luna and the ancestral wolves.

The piece is staged with front-facing shadow puppetry designed on a tablet, cut out of paper, and projected on a scrim or sheet with handheld flashlights. The show incorporates the shadows of paper and human puppets and household items to animate the atmosphere and create a dynamic and magical world. A video version of the puppetry is available for licensing.

These are some of the songs written during my year in Varanasi, India. I had lots of help from people around the world (literally), and I am thankful to all of them. 

Unanswered Questions: Jonathan McHugh offered his vocals to this song. The words are inspired by many of our conversations long into the Indian evenings.

Jiyaa Laage Naa- written mostly by Sukhdevji who was so patient when teaching me Hindi pronunciation in songs.

Halfway Up The Mountain- Sukhdevji is the beautiful violin accompanying the piece.

Moment- this song is a result of Benjamin Moe's determination and genius. He's kind enough to let me share the collaboration.
