The tune is a short section from a 12thC pilgrim song from Spain, called Vernum bonum et suave. I've changed a note to make it fit better in a round, and thrown some words at it.

This is a recycled tune from one I reluctantly discarded for 'Unconquered Won The Day'. I was writing something rather more serious, but the tune earwormed me and then this pretty much wrote itself.

If you have not heard John Taverner's 'Funeral Ikos', please take the time to look it up and have a listen and/or buy a copy. It is one of my favourite pieces of modern religious music, and I cannot recommend it enough.

I have taken his harmonies and structures and used a slightly altered version of my poem 'For the Ten' which remembers the ten characters that died in Spiral in 382YE, but can be applied to any character that fell in service to the Empire. 

For the Ten

Sometimes I talk to them
As if they were behind a pillar
Just out of sight but not out of mind
Sometimes I miss them
A weight upon my chest
Pushing down with all the force of their loss

The words are mine, originally written while I was playing in Varushka.
