South America pays tribute to the historic and contemporary ingenuity of musicians and composers from South America, Astor Piazzolla, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Carlos Gardel, Antonio’s father the violinist Alberto Lysy, and new work by the Argentine bandoneon master Coco Trivisonno.

This recording includes harpist Marcia Dickstein Vogler in Villa-Lobos’ Black Swan for harp and cello, flutist Anastasia Petanova in Villa-Lobos’ Jet Whistle for flute and cello, and Coco Trivisonno in three of his arrangments of Volver, Divina and Yo Te Bendigo, songs immortalized by Carlos Gardel.  Coco is one of the last living members of Astor Piazzolla’s intrepid ensemble. As standard in Yarlung albums, Antonio's performances with Marcia, Anastasia and Coco are all single takes.   

The Kodály Duo and Antonio’s father Alberto Lysy: 

Along with pianist Martha Argerich, Antonio's father the violinist Alberto Lysy remains one of South America’s most celebrated classical concert musicians.  Alberto learned this work with the composer in advance of a performance with Gaspar Cassadó in 1958. Alberto's next performance of the Duo was with Jacqueline Du Pré. Later, Antonio and Alberto became major performers of the piece.

Confessions (Contemporary American Art Song)

Song serves as one of the most important building blocks of western civilization. When a composer sets beautiful and important words to music, we hear, understand, and internalize them in a different way than we do when we read them or hear these words as speech. When performed in concert or as part of a recital, the audience not only learns something about the singer as a musician but also who they are as a person – what they believe, what moves them, perhaps even glimpsing their insecurities, struggles, fears, hopes, as well as what makes them happy.

American Art Song is experiencing a Golden Age, and for her recital, Confessions, soprano Laura Strickling has selected some of her personal favorites to offer a fascinating cross-section of the State of the Art(song). Featured are songs and song cycles by the Brazilian-American, Grammy-nominated composer, pianist, and singer Clarice Assad, cutting edge composer, vocalist, and visual artist, Gilda Lyons,  the prolific Tom Cipullo, whose World World II-based opera The Parting was premiered with Laura in the starring role as Fanni Radnoti, composer Amy Beth Kirsten whose award-winning music blends a genuine feel for pop melody with fierce expressionism and theatre, the internationally acclaimed young composer Michael Djupstrom and the Grammy-award winning Libby Larson.
