Laura Piras (B.A. (Hons) MMus, MA) specialises in the performance of 17th, 18th & 19th century works on historical flutes. She studied for a M.A. in Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music with Lisa Beznosiuk and Rachel Brown, graduating with Distinction and winning the prestigious Nancy Nuttall Early Music Prize.

Laura has performed with The Hanover Band, Parley of Instruments, London Baroque Sinfonia, Little Baroque Company, London Handel Orchestra, Southern Sinfonia, International Baroque Soloists, Arcangelo and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for education projects and as part of the Ann & Peter Law Experience.

Laura has performed in concerts directed by Sir Mark Elder, Jeffrey Skidmore and Laurence Cummings and regularly as a soloist in the RAM/Kohn Bach Cantata Series directed by Iain Ledingham, including a concert directed by John Butt. Laura also performs with baroque chamber ensemble The Regent’s Soloists.

Before specialising in historical performance Laura read music at the University of East Anglia, receiving a B.A. (Hons) and a M.Mus on modern flute. She was awarded four major scholarships for performance studies from the School of Music (Hilda Houssart, Britten-Pears, Imogen Holst and Frank Thistlethwaite scholarships) which enabled her to receive flute lessons from William Sleath and Paul-Edmund Davies. On graduating she was awarded the Dorothea and Rowan Hare Young Musicians Concert, a prize awarded to one UEA music graduate per year.

Laura is also an enthusiastic and dedicated flute teacher to adults and children. She teaches in London and her experience includes a post as flute teacher for the University of East Anglia from 2007-11. She currently teaches at Graveney School in Tooting.
