Sydney’s Danny Wild has always been enamoured by space. From the dub influenced Absorbing Pavement to the minimalist brilliance of Blow Waves, Wild’s releases as Low Flung are as much about the silences and undulations he fills his songs with as they are his dreamy electronics and glassy instruments.

His latest single, ‘Oil in the Mangroves, Pt.2’—out Friday as part of Bedroom Suck Records’ Private Eyes series—is arguably his most expansive and rewarding release to date. Over 20 palatial minutes, Wild blends meditative synths with field recordings of the Australian landscape and organic instrumentation to create a lush, immersive sound world that’s overflowing with activity. It’s something that all of his highly eclectic releases have in common, but ‘Oil in the Mangroves, Pt.2’ pushes that textural complexity further than ever before, blurring the line between the origin of his sounds and the output he renders. The result is a song that feels fit to burst the small bedroom studio it was conceived in—a track that conjures images of the dense, fertile coastlines it was inspired by, and the interminable ebb and flow of the tide.

This monthly issue of POOLcast marks our 5th anniversary. Five years ago we started to present you music from us, our musician friends and musical discoveries every month. With this episode we end our 5th season and half a decade of POOLcast.

For this occasion gnilyf has provided us again with one of his self-made mixtapes, which, fitting to the expiring decade, seems to serve as a stirring and stirring metaphor for the year or decade that is running out. Wavering rhythms are carried through shimmering layers, disharmonic drones are stacked on top of each other until they create an echo of confidence. Jazzy and electronic phrases vie for your attention as they seem to be played from the stage by bold experimental soundscapes. An everlasting struggle between truth and clarity. The last decade and especially the last months have shown us that truth does not mean clarity and that you can get into a fly glass faster than you thought possible. True clarity is hidden behind a veil of unpredictability that is formed by multiple futures. Moments of clarity grant us only a brief glimpse of one of these possible future events, only to be veiled again a few moments later, and we blindly try to take the right path. 

So stay tuned and be with us for the next 5 years.
