TIGER, tiger, burning bright 
In the forests of the night, 
What immortal hand or eye 
Could frame thy fearful symmetry? 

In what distant deeps or skies 
Burnt the fire of thine eyes? 
On what wings dare he aspire? 
What the hand dare seize the fire? 

And what shoulder and what art 
Could twist the sinews of thy heart? 
And when thy heart began to beat, 
What dread hand and what dread feet? 

What the hammer? what the chain? 
In what furnace was thy brain? 
What the anvil? What dread grasp 
Dare its deadly terrors clasp? 

When the stars threw down their spears, 
And water'd heaven with their tears,

Did He who made the lamb make thee?

The Tiger

The first movement from the string quartet Anacostia Journal, by Lauren Bernofsky.  

Anacostia Journal is a tribute to the endangered nature in the Anacostia River region in Washington, D. C. and the efforts of the Earth Conservation Corps to restore the natural environment to its original state. The piece is the result of a composer residency I did with the Earth Conservation Corps' Eagle Corps; I interviewed the members about their most memorable experiences, and I based the movements of this string quartet on the stories they told me.

Rain is an essential, life-giving element – it cleanses the Earth and nourishes living things. But too much rain in the Anacostia region can be a problem. Because of all the paved areas of land, there is less ground available which can absorb the rainwater, and the excess water goes into the sewer system. Too much rain overburdens the system, however, and raw, untreated sewage ends up pouring straight into the Anacostia River.

Rain

Duck Talk
Ducks seem to be ubiquitous. Why? Because they're hardy – they're survivors. Even though much of the bird life that used to be part of the Anacostia region is gone, ducks remain. We often take these exquisite creatures for granted, but they are in fact an affirmation of life, life that prevails. This movement imitates the sound of a group of ducks having a "conversation".

Tree's Lament
If a tree could speak, what would it say? Trees need what all living things need: clean air, clean water, room to grow. When a tree is deprived of these, the tree cannot thrive. When a tree's root system doesn't have enough space to spread, the roots get crowded and start to create knobby "knee" shapes, called "girdling roots". It is easy to overlook the needs of a tree, because we can't hear it speak, but trees are living creatures, too, with whom we share our Earth.

Tree's Lament

The piece is the result of a composer residency I did with the Earth Conservation Corps' Eagle Corps; I interviewed the members about their most memorable experiences, and I based the movements of this string quartet on the stories they told me.

Stench was inspired by accounts from the Corps members about a very hot and humid summer's day when they were in (literally in)  the Anacostia, pulling out old tires and other garbage. It had just rained, and the River was especially high and there was more raw sewage present than usual. What has stuck in their minds was the terrible smell of the water that day.

Stench

A Tree Grows
One of the favorite activities of the Eagle Corps members is tree planting. A number of them are involved with beautification projects, adding trees, flowers, and other plants to the surrounding area. Trees provide natural beauty, shade, a means of cleaning the air, a means of holding the ground in place, food for certain insects and animals, and, of course, a home to birds. Toward the end of this movement, one can hear bird calls from four species of birds that inhabit the Anacostia River region: the Tufted Titmouse, the White-throated Sparrow, the Northern Mockingbird, and the Mourning Dove.

A Tree Grows

Riverwalk
The Anacostia River, as of the year 2003, is still polluted, and the surrounding area is the bleak embodiment of industrialization, with large buildings and factories lining the riverbanks. The air is pervaded by the sound of dump trucks rumbling by, rather than birdsong. There are few trees, little wildlife – certainly not a place that would draw people to come savor nature. But the Earth Conservation Corps members are working to change all this. They have drafted plans for a glorious boardwalk along the River, which they are calling the Riverwalk. In addition to the wooden walkway will be benches so one can sit at the River and enjoy the area, as well as drinking fountains, bicycle racks, newly-planted foliage, and even an outdoor art exhibit area. This Riverwalk represents the hope and aspirations of these youth to restore and revitalize the nature around the Anacostia River and share it with others, showing them why we need to preserve our Earth.
