The Portal

I have roots in Celtic music, and played for several years with Bill Craig, seen in the photo with the Guinness. We were called the Foggy Duo. I wrote and played all the instruments including tin whistle and mandolin. The rest is electronic done in Logic. Thanks again for Moshon at SGTC for his mastering greatness!

In the autumn of 2012, Ian Boddy played two concerts on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The first was his fourth solo appearance at the Gatherings, hosted by Chuck van Zyl, in Philadelphia, USA. Four weeks later he then played at the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool, UK. There might have been over 5,000 kilometres separating the two gigs but Boddy played the same set at each and both his performances were multi-track recorded.

Back in his studio Boddy then proceeded to edit the audio down to a single CD length and to merge the two shows to create a composite concert. Nothing additional was added, but rather, a careful mix was made of the best sections from each performance to create a unique album that was true to the spirit of the original concerts.

In the field of electronic music, Boddy has played live more times than most. He is currently clocking in at around 150+ concerts and the effortless way he manipulates his music in a live setting is a testament to this experience. The music rises and falls in a series of organic, analogue soundscapes. Beautiful moments of musical tenderness are contrasted with large, grandiose orchestrations. The sequencer sections crackle and sparkle with pent up analogue power, with Boddy weaving a web of intricate Moog solo lines and mellotron chords.

The album is released in a strictly limited edition run of 555 copies, in a beautifully designed digipak, featuring the "pumpkin synth" design by Chuck van Zyl for the posters of the Philadelphia show. Thus "Liverdelphia" is a perfect showcase for the unique style of live electronic music created by this well respected UK musician.

She Swims Back

In 1992, CBC Radio decided to put on a Radio Festival to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the death of famed Canadian piano player and radio documentary maker Glenn Gould. Steve Wadhams was tasked with implementing the radio documentary portion and chose to follow Gould's lead in mixing musical technique with radio documentary form. To aid with this, he enlisted his office neighbour, radio sound effects tech Laurence Stevenson who demonstrated the possibilities of Pitch-to-MIDI. To further the musical side of the project, they made a call to Music Producer David Jaeger to suggest a suitable candidate to orchestrate their material. In an inspired moment, he proposed composer Christos Hatzis, an extremely talented composer and very congenial collaborator. To complete the team, they enlisted mixing engineer Rod Crocker, whose imaginative contributions furthered the project immensely.
From the cassette notes: The Idea of Canada is a new form of audio composition. Speech and music combine as equal partners, each enhancing the effect of the other. The words are the voices of Canadians, speaking from the heart about what Canada means to them. Some don't believe in Canada at all. Some believe passionately in this country. Some see it as a good idea that has somehow gone wrong. The music complements and comments on these thoughts and is often actually derived from them using the pitch, rhythm and timbre of the spoken word. All this is supplemented by an aural backdrop drawn from the sounds of the Canadian landscape. The Idea of Canada is a counterpoint of music and ideas inspired by the experimental radio documentaries produced in the 1960's and 70's by the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould. It was produced in 1992 using the latest computer technology - wizardry that Gould could only have dreamed of! For example, one particularly effective innovation is a technique which allows the spoken word to turn itself into music by triggering its own distinctive 'sound shadow', giving the speech a haunting and compelling quality. Sometimes the 'shadow' is a single sound (a cello, a saxophone, or a synthesized sound), sometimes a combination of sounds. One voice, asking the question "do you believe in Canada?" was given a shadow made up of drums, bass and electric guitar. Gould's vocal counterpoint, featured so strongly in his radio documentaries is greatly developed and extended in The Idea of Canada, thanks to computer sequencing and MIDI technology. By assigning phrases and words to notes on a keyboard, Christos Hatzis was able to compose elaborate polyphony; a clash of voices and viewpoints which is musically complex, but remarkably easy to follow and understand. The thoughts constantly re-appear in new forms and new contexts, giving them surprising twists and subtle shadings. The Idea of Canada was conceived by CBC producer Steve Wadhams as an attempt to express Canadians' competing beliefs about what this country is. It does not argue one side or another in the national debate, it simply tries to reflect it in a powerful and poignant way. As voice and music flow around each other easily and dramatically, there are moments of chaos and quietness, anger and hope. There is humour too, with a comic cameo appearance by Glenn Gould himself, springing forth from the archives to comment on a national unity hotline!
