The whole EP was made in November, after a long long spell of creative inactivity and self doubt, along with the rest of the EP, in the space of a week or so. It was a reminder of how great it can feel to make music when you get the urgent feeling of needing to write something. Laurence Guy returns to Shall Not Fade with his much-anticipated third EP, adding to last year’s massively successful ‘The Sun Is Warm and Directly Above You’ and ‘Your Good Times Will Come’. The London-based producer has amassed a global audience of listeners, all united in their appreciation for his luscious, upbeat house music and an outstanding discography of releases via imprints like: Ninja Tune, Late Night Tales, Studio Barnhus and Mule Musique.

While still unmistakably Laurence Guy’s signature style of delicately constructed, sample-heavy dance music, this EP carries a sombre note, reflective of the confusing times in which it was made. The A-side’s ‘Love Theme For The Morning After’ maintains a positive and danceable atmosphere, an ode to the moments of clarity and contentment we grasp in the afterglow. Musically, it is an ecstatic build-up of chords that leave you breathless, with a rhythm that pulses as consistently as a heartbeat throughout.  
By comparison to this joyfully glittering track, the B-side deals with more difficult emotions. Throughout ‘Mutual Excitement’, barely distinguishable vocal samples overlap each other in a hazy clamour, whilst natural keys play a bittersweet melody, pondering the uncertainty of a new relationship. Guy says of the final track, ‘Certain (To A Certain Extent)’ “2020 was a hard year to be certain of anything, I found myself frozen in pretty much every decision I had to make”. The song, a stripped-back melody built from a low fidelity jazz sound palette, is not just an exploration of the sense of uncertainty 2020 gave us, but expresses Guy’s acceptance of living without certainty. This soothing message is at the core of the EP, managing to create a sense of hope during an unsettled time.

Laurence Guy is an incredibly talented producer with an array of top tier releases. His debut album in 2017 on Church Records 'Saw You For The First Time' undoubtedly gripped any lovers of house music's attention. Since then he has released a series of cherished EPs on various labels, with this upcoming one with Miller Blue being his 5 appearance on Shall Not Fade. On top of his productions, Laurence is a passionate digger and skilled selector who has blessed dance-floors around the world with his underground house sounds. We particularly enjoy his Rinse FM shows where he smoothly jumps between genres from ambient, classical, house DnB to name a few. For their Bside podcast they opt to record half an hour separately. Laurence kicks things off showcasing his diverse taste in music dipping into some classic funk, a favourite self produced B-side, DnB, and 'the best deep house track in existence'. Miller follows with a mixture of his taste in records, displaying his soulful and jazzy sounds along with some club ready house.

Miller Blue - “‘My Heart Still Leans On You’ talks about the painful and often confusing experience of still being attached to someone that you’ve cut ties with. Although it may have been for the best, the heart doesn’t get to choose who it connects with and letting go can be a very difficult process."

Laurence Guy - “Miller has an uncanny ability to write lyrics that reflect my own feelings at different times that I can’t find my own words for. ‘My Heart Still Leans on You’ is a perfect example of this and it’s even more poignant to me now than it was when he first wrote it.

This is the second single from me and my buddy Miller Blue on Shall Not Fade ❤️  I’m really proud of this one as I feel it’s a marriage of the kinda classic LG sound with Millers beautiful writing/vocals, which came together over a four day studio trip in Tetbury (shouts as always to Matt Karmil for engineering this) Miller has such a knack for writing relatable lyrics in his songs and this is a perfect example. I’m happy to be making more “involved” records in recent times and need to big up Shall Not Fade for supporting! I hope you enjoy the music x

So hyped to release a tune I made with one of my best mates J.Peacock today! This one was made after a pretty long break from making music as I got a bit lost in what I wanted to do and overthinking shit. Me and Joel got together for a late night studio session one Friday with a bunch of samples (from his Dad’s killer 7” sou collection) and a load of beers and went IN. Tom Pardy made an appearance at some point also (shout out Tom). In the morning the project was pretty messy, but we sorted that on the next session and here we are. This night in the studio basically instigated me writing the rest of the EP over the next week or so (more on these later).  As always, hope you’re into it, let me know what you think. Happy Piano Day! The piano is absolutely my favourite instrument, both to play and to sample. I always use it to begin the writing process, just playing around with chords/melodies, even though it may not always be a feature in the final track. This particular jam is a combination of piano and the Casio CZ synthesizer and inspired both entirely and unashamedly by Daniel Lopatin :)

Music’s power is in creating community, and this is the essence of Laurence Guy’s work. The London-based DJ and producer’s motto is ‘music to make you feel feelings’: whether that’s comfort, nostalgia, bittersweetness or melancholy. His sound has an unmistakable warmth while being squarely aimed at the dancefloor: samples fit into sprawling keys, and dusty drums thud under lush chords. Amid a string of EPs, Guy has released two acclaimed albums; 2017’s blissful house LP Saw You For The First Time and 2023’s Living Like There’s No Tomorrow, But Killing Yourself In The Process, gracing labels including Studio Barnhus, Ninja Tune, Shall Not Fade and more, now signed to Future Classic.
