Lauren Lee’s music has been described as, “equal parts hip jazz, avant adventure, and… something completely different” by John Pietaro, Dissident Arts. Likened both to the female jazz pioneers that came before her as well as artists like Regina Spektor and Bjork, Lee's compositions and improvisational style nestle between straight ahead sensibilities and avant garde techniques. Her work intentionally inhabits this place of “between”, and in Lee’s case, the “between” is nestled between where jazz has been and where jazz is going.

Have you ever looked out a window and let a daydream take you somewhere else? This activity has been a source of entertainment for wildly creative pianist/vocalist Lauren Lee for decades. As a child, growing up in a rural area wasn’t as compelling as the wild inventiveness of Lee who now is a New York City resident (10 years), but as long as she was armed with a powerful and fanciful imagination, she was able to escape the doldrums in her mind. Windowsill serves as a soundtrack to Lee’s past journeys, both in her mind’s eye and in the physical realm. While the concept of ‘letting your imagination run wild’ has always been appealing to her, two events stirred the idea to conceptualize a series of compositions around the very broad themes of ‘daydreaming’ and ‘wanderlust’. 

Lauren Lee is a forward-thinking vocalist, pianist, and composer based in New York City on a wild goose chase of sorts to find her own sound in the adventurous music scene as a young innovator. On Windowsill, you’ll hear a different approach to composition and improvisation coming from this young vocalist where her melodies skip and bounce all while being doubled by piano and voice, both under the control of Lee’s masterful touch. You’ll hear her doubling improvisations on piano or Fender Rhodes with her voice giving us a hint at some of Kurt Rosenwinkel’s The Next Step with an added freshness to the sonic palette. 

Windowsill will be released on indie label, ears&eyes Records, on October 18th 2019.
