When we first heard his track, “Proximity”, the energy immediately captivated us. Raw, aggressive, but controlled and defined at the same. Purpose is so important, and having a clear understanding of why we do something, matters a great deal.
 
No words from the artist this episode, but we were pleasantly surprised with the set ISMAEL. delivered, showing a new side of himself that we didn’t know.

Tensegrity EP is an exploration into converting non-linear storytelling devices used in cinema and literature into the musical realm.
As @sgnlf so kindly puts it: ”The resulting pieces treat this approach in a variety of ways from the looping-yet-stretching tempo structures of TON618 to the constant acceleration of Tensegrity, and manifest into audible similes to tensegrity structures seemingly on the verge of collapsing while retaining a firm structure held together by mere tension. The tracks bend and stretch not only tempo, but club tropes from classic breakbeat snippets to euphoric acceleration. Additionally, the title track Tensegrity is expertly remixed by Shanghai experimentalist and SVKBVLT affiliate Gooooose as well as Precious Metals CEO Endgame.”

Tensegrity EP

Cold nights and warmer sunny days causes stress on thick lake ice. As the ice freezes and melts on a daily basis, periodic cracking and pinging sounds can be heard, sometimes quite dramatically. This track is edited from an all night recording made at a lake in south Estonia, a "greatest cracks" if you will, from more than 6 hours of material.

Recue is the creative outlet of Riku Annala, a Helsinki based producer exploring the left field of electronic music. Recueʼs earliest recordings date back to the early 2000s and his genre-fluid approach to music has led to work with labels like Touched Music and Detroit Underground. Recueʼs work often features collaborative elements and heʼs had the pleasure to work with artists such as Robot Koch, Jamie Lidell, Julien Marchal and Jesse Markin either through direct features in his solo material or through remixing their work. His music has also served as the backdrop for theater and TV productions, one being the travel series Madventures.
His latest body of work Tensegrity has been released through the Finnish record label Signal Life, and it delves into converting non-linear storytelling devices from literature and cinema into the musical realm by dismantling static tempo completely.
Especially for our podcast Recue has recorded a wonderful mix of both released and unreleased tracks.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- It's difficult to pinpoint artists that have influenced me the most, but there are a lot of artists whose work has resonated with me throughout the years, and I'm sure each of them have contributed to my work in some way. Artists like Lorn, Hecq, Amon Tobin, Jon Hopkins, Machinedrum and Arca each have their own sound that has inspired me in some ways, not to mention classics like Aphex Twin and the whole period of 90s rave and IDM music that I grew up with.
 
What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- I have few collaborations in the making, that I'll leave unnamed at this point, and the mix also includes some unreleased work, that might see an official release in the near future. I'm also prepping more of the non-linear music, that I did with Tensegrity EP last year.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- The mix provides a good cross section of some of the inspiration I've been feeling, but to mention some specifically, the genre fluid aesthetic of Signal Life and Analogical Force, both of which I've released music on lately, is something that I've been feeling. Also Prague based label Yuku is pushing boundaries in a direction that I find really interesting.

What inspires you now to create music?

- Basically the same thing that's kept me going over the years: Because it's fun. I like the creative process, finding out and learning new things. Breaking the linearity of electronic music in Tensegrity EP was an extra pinch of inspiration, since it brought a completely new angle on creating. I want to continue that and see where it leads.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I have a studio full of synths and samplers, but the brain of everything is Ableton Live. I could get rid of all the hardware and still be able to make music with it. Not that I'd want to though! Hardware can be tons of fun as well.

>> Reigo Nahksepp on Tallinnast pärit kunstnik, kes on õppinud Eesti Kunstiakadeemias installatsiooni ja skulptuuri. Oma praktikas keskendub ta linnaruumile ja selle ümbermõtestamisele. Tema loomingus on tähtsal kohal popkultuur ja muu trendikas värk.

>> Martin Roosna on graffiti kunstnik, kelle töid võib lisaks Eesti erinevate linnade ja nurkade ning nurgataguste leida ka Soomest ja Tšehhist. Keskendub ajutise, argise ja kaduva jäädvustamisele läbi visandamise. Joonistamine praktikana on olemise aeglusti.

>> Aleksei Gordin on mitmekülgne kunstnik, kes kasutab oma loomingus nii kaamerat, pintslit/pliiatsit kui keha. Tihti on maalide peategelaseks autor ise, kes toob välja igapäevaseid absurdsusi, mida me tavaliselt ei märka, sest oleme sellega harjunud.

Lauri Lest is an Estonian musician, sound and performance artist. Lauri creates and plays atmospheric electronic music, works with found objects, vibration speakers and sound and video editing software. His art can be described as melancholic, dreamy, experimental and sometimes humorous. He has released three studio albums and holds a degree in sculpture and installation from the Estonian Academy of Arts.
