GIMME A MIXTAPE 012 - DJ HAM SANDWICH

To contribute something to the series I recorded a few warmup‘s that I played recently in clubs. I chose the one recorded at my residency club in Cologne - Gewölbe. Beginning with Ambient, building up with Trance and House ending with some 4-to-the-floor tracks. Normally I’m recording mixes with a prepared selection at home, for this one I decided to take a club recording as mixing in clubs is more a spontaneous and energetic thing in comparison to mixing at home. Only Vinyl, like always.

This is my latest @refugeworldwide set. I’m not 100% satisfied with the transitions and pairing of tracks, nevertheless every mix is a practice, from which I’m learning something for future sets.

I have recently been focusing on “pitch riding” : a technique in which, instead of speeding or slowing down the record by hand, this is done by moving the pitch slider in back and forth movements. This mix was a first try to apply that technique throughout the whole mix… 😮‍💨 (With 1-2 exceptions where I lost my shit and instantly corrected the pitch using my hand). 

I’m still at the beginning of perfecting that technique, it’s a process of daily practice and endless repetitions until it sits right, and for me to learn and accept to embrace mistakes rather than to avoid them. I have always been so afraid of making mistakes in public, or in mixes, afraid of being judged for it. But instead I’m trying to learn to accept them and to see the little mistakes as a valuable part on the way of improving.

This post turned out to be a bit longer than I anticipated, but I felt like sharing my experience of the past weeks.
