Join us as we celebrate the adventurous side of 80’s dance music & the emergence of the B-side dub mix! 🧡​🧡🧡

​​Like all club music innovations, the DANCE DUB was born from the interplay between dancers & DJ’s. Adventurous dancers responded to stripped-down, rhythm-heavy compositions – so adventurous DJ’s started doing remixes that stripped away vocals from dance songs of the day, pushed rhythm front & center and added heavy echo & reverb for a trippy, mystic dance vibe.

​​Aural inspiration came from Jamaica, obviously (sometimes via London, as with TW Funkmasters’ massively influential Love Money, produced by British reggae personality Tony Williams. The extraordinarily dubby “Champagne Mix ” is included here).

The dub mixes typically appeared on the B-side of the main mix – for the first time providing the DJ totally different takes on a single song. Their rhythm-heavy minimalism and freedom from traditional song structures went on to influence all of dance music down the line (the blueprints for house & techno were just a few years away).

This mix is a selection of personal faves from this fascinating era.

Taas palaa hullu maailma. MMV:ssä keskitytään kuitenkin iloisempaan asiaan, nimittäin Suomen historian voimakkaimpaan opiskelijaliikkeeseen. Ainakin 55 valtausta on tehty yliopistoissa, ammattikorkeakouluissa, lukioissa ja amiksissa ympäri maan. Mistä kaikki nämä ihmiset oikein tulevat? Miksi valtaukset onnistuivat niin hyvin? Miten onnistuttiin ylittämään nolousvyöhyke? Entä mitä tehdä seuraavaksi?

Pontus esittelee valtaajien kokemuksia aktivismin koukuttavuudesta, instituutioiden tavoista halata valtaajat kuoliaaksi, koulutuksen depolitisoinnista, valtausten järjestäytymisestä ja opiskelijoiden kyvystä ottaa etäisyyttä kapitalistisen yhteiskunnan rutiineihin. Veikka pohtii mm. teorian ja käytännön suhdetta valtauksilla, valtauksien kykyä muuttaa kaupunkitilaa ja sitä, kuinka valtauksissa näkyy feministisen ja antirasistisen liikehdinnän vaikutus edellisen 10 vuoden ajalta.

Lisäksi käydään läpi opiskelijaliikehdinnän 800-vuotista historiaa. Suosituksissa eläinten oikeuksia, hiljaa olemista, kirjallisuutta ja pelejä.

Ocean People stands for a lifetime of musical exploration – and a pandemic reinvention.

Growing up far north in Helsinki, Sampo aka Ocean People fell in love with hip hop and DJing at the age of 13. A decade later, as DJ Anonymous, he was sharing bills with De La Soul, The Roots & Common. He was also traveling to play cities across Europe. Tours later extended to Asia & North America – first NYC booking was at beloved & long-gone APT.

A childhood spent with hip hop stimulated a voracious appetite for adjacent sounds. By 2000, Sampo had partnered with friends to start Lifesaver, a specialist record shop. It was popular with locals and visitors alike. J-Dilla, Moodymann and countless others all dropped some hard-earned €€€ there.
He was also falling deeper in love with disco, house and their intercontinental variants. This was a personal revelation, as it led to a full appreciation of collective dance floor joy. It is also the origin story of Ocean People.

The idea existed dormant for years, as Sampo focused on business outside the DJ realm. In the isolation of the pandemic, inspiration struck hard. This resulted in a new course of musical action, under a new pseudonym.

Since then, Ocean People has built a shared home base called HRD Underground Workshop. It's a purpose-built IRL space that explores co-operative action and high-fidelity sound. HRD also streams curated live recordings on its Soundcloud platform.
In the booth, Ocean People aspires to always deliver timeless, emotive dance music, weaved into expansive narrative arches. No matter the setting, collective joy remains the singular goal.
