Cooked up with a more melodic vibe and fusing elements of house and techno, Dense & Pika’s latest outing on Drumcode offers something different compared to their previous work. There is still that vintage feel to each of the tracks with analogue sounds and arrangements born and developed from experimental studio jams. Indeed, ‘Suki’ heavily utilizes the distinct harmonic tones of the Dave Smith Prophet 8 keyboard. While ‘Little Sun’ - A staple of D&P performances over the last three months - delivers a more classic Drumcode sound. ‘Lanky’ closes out the release with an infectious slab of wonderfully wonked-out raw funk.

Last spotted switching up a summer hit from fellow countrymen Kraak & Smaak, Rotterdam roustabout Bas Roos returns to Robsoul for his first single on Phil Weeks since 2017… And he’s packing a slab of tracks so juicy in their disco funk appeal you’ll need a towel every time you play them.
‘About The Rhythm’ lights up the joint. Loopy, full bodied, hypnotic and pure disco with its gentle raise in vibe and warmth, it’s an instant party blazer. Dig deeper for ‘Smilin’’, a track that lives up to its name as strips the elements down to the naked hip-slinking essentials. Perfect for those deep weave mixes.
Last but not least, ‘Like Jazz’ provides the EP closure. Heady, tracky and brazenly chugging with its loose drums slapping either side of the dubby elements, it’s the late night yin to the EP’s vibrant funk yang. All corners covered, all rhythms worked; let’s hope it’s not another two years before we see him on Robsoul again.

CPEN and Bluey Robinson return to Madhouse Records in late February as they reveal their latest single ‘When U Say’.

A firm fixture of the US deep house scene for almost two decades, West Coast talent Chris Penny aka CPEN has remained a name of note releasing music via the likes of Seasons Recordings and Memorabilia, whilst rising talent and vocalist Bluey Robinson made his impressive first foray into the scene last year having previously provided vocals across a range of genres from soul through to hip-hop and beyond.

Following the release of their debut collaboration ‘I’m Searching’ on the label in 2018, re-visited by label boss Kerri Chandler in December as he delivered three fresh interpretations championed by the likes of The Black Madonna, Anja Schneider, Groove Armada and Catz ‘n Dogz, the pairing now delivers their latest collaboration ‘When U Say’ on the imprint to kick start 2019.

Opening the release, the Dub Mix of ‘When U Say’ sees Penny delve for a combination of classic organ leads amongst slick, skipping percussion, before releasing the soulful and infectious vocals of Bluey throughout the Vocal Mix. Last up, the focus is shifted solely to the music as the Instrumental rounds out the package in style.
