Exclusive: Papolious Jones - We're The OGs (Original Ghosts)

Mr. Jones, also known as Brian Topham, is back with the second installment on his label Top Rhythm Boppers, simply called Volume 2, a musical conglomeration of four different moods and therefore four different approaches to music itself. Musically the EP, of course, draws on Papolious Jones' first five tracker just that this time the Barcelona-based artist stimulates the body, mind and soul with some musical funk(iness). The EP starts with We're The OGs (Original Ghosts), which not only comes in with a lush and seemingly groovey bass line but has, as the track title already reveals, haunting chord-sequences that evoke a spooky yet mysterious atmosphere. Bleepy chords as well as slight percussive elements in the background respectively in the low frequencies serve as the harmonic counterpart and add a certain warmth to the track, so that We're The OGs is the soundtrack to a dark vault rave.

Exclusive: Brent - Liquid Gold

London-based event-series Gradient launches its label and kicks off the new era with a four-tracker from Brent, which goes by the name of Digital Karma. The Liverpudlian therefore delivers four club-ready tracks weaving himself skillfully through various electronic music sub-genres and styles. 

The EP opens with the title track, a homage to 80s synth-sounds which are combined with an Edith Piaf cameo generating a flamboyant French vibe and guaranteeing the EP an exquisite start. 

Up next is the most housey take on the EP, namely Don’t Call The Dr. The lush 4/4 bassline in addition to the robotic vocals as well as the inclusion of rolling triplets in the track’s lows and the overall rather minimalistic approach turn the track to a magic bullet for the floors.

The B-side starts with Liquid Gold, probably the slower and more melodic version of the A2. Liquid Gold comes in with super sweet sung vocals, a lower BPM as the previous tracks and spaced out elements in reference to the EPs title Digital Karma, as latter always strikes back and here it hits audience hard.

Ultimately there’s (S.O.M.) or the most techy track of the EP. With a stamping yet groovey bassline, its vocoder-led ode to Liverpool and a memorable chord-sequence (S.O.M.) offers another musical facet of Brent, who manages to take his listeners all the way through different (sub)genres yet remains true to his style.

Puy de Sancy is renowned for its picturesque views, so it was just right for a getaway. Needle and Plate set off down the slope in the early afternoon to enjoy the playful landscapes. Gusts of wind mingled with the chirping of birds and blurred into a unified soundscape, mimicking a rare vinyl of field recordings.

Each step was immersive, allowing one to drift toward the tops of the trees, get lost among rustling leaves, and take a look at oneself from the outside. The daylight was replaced by twilight filled with the anticipation of camping and a pleasant fatigue which did not stop one from putting up the tent. Now there was nothing superfluous left around – only the crackle of the fire, two merry men and a magic joint.

– Can you believe it? I can feel the universe sequencing.
– Yeah, that's a good one. I wonder how our homegrown bush is doing. All right, look what I got.
– Did you bring your portable speaker again? I thought we had a deal.
– You know how much I love music. Don't be mad. Have you heard of these two?
