Abstracting the voice of a single creature from a habitat and trying to understand it regardless of its own context is a little like trying to comprehend an elephant by examining only a single hair at the tip of its tail. On the contrary, integrated sounds of nature in a given time and place of an environment have a specific context and meaning. In many regards, it mimics a modern-day orchestra: the voice of each creature has its own frequency, amplitude, timbre, and duration, and occupies a unique niche among the other musicians; the sum of each of these voices gives birth to a biophony. This bio-orchestra or biophony represents a unique sound grouping for a given biome with diverse “bio-vibrations” and an array of messages for the soul; one of them is that sound is discontinuous. If nature “vibrates” sounds, every bio-vibration of the biosphere is a finite and discrete time instant. However, from a “macroscopic” view point, biosounds are, on the other hand, continuous, which results from superimposing one bio-vibration to another and linking them together. The continuity of biosounds is just a matter of integrated global perception, which in many cases is deeply memorized by our central nervous system. The same incredible system that builds consciousness, multimedia memories, creative dreams, as well as our sense of life and love.

a little while ago i made a track called "the sparrow", which was inspired largely by the novel of the same name by mary doria russell. more recently i have been using this little piano motif in my live shows which i explored in greater depth here, and ended up making something that reminded me of that earlier track, so i have named it thusly. this one is inspired by the first days of spring and the beautiful music of the song sparrows that i have been enjoying during my time spent outside. i recorded the piano parts on my kakwai ce-7 upright, and used some recordings of those sparrows for some digital sound design. i also found an old recording of some bass drones that i did with an arp odyssey when i had one, which seemed to fit well within the track.

"In this decade, I visited many places in order to record organic sounds such as, rare bird voices and sounds of waves (I live in the basin area far from sea). There is a river near my house and I often visit there to record, or merely walk. When I recorded in the early morning hours at that riverside for ‘Under the Morning Mist’, the body of water was beautifully wrapped with a dense mist. A gorgeous backdrop and inspiration for this arrangement. 


A park located in the city where I reside, was the inspiration for the arrangement, 'In This Perfect Dream'. The captured sounds of trees, leaves, and the winds.. All beautiful sounds around me that we typically take for granted. I got lost in time, it felt like a perfect dream, hence the title of this arrangement."

Maps And Diagrams - Rediscovered Acoustics For Winter [December 2019]

The Wine Dark Sea is Bissonnette’s fifth solo studio album. The album’s title is derived from the writings of Homer, where he oft referred to a rough and stormy sea as “wine-dark”. Homer’s descriptions of colour are devoid of any reference to the colour blue. And any suggested meaning in his description of the sea point to the colour red. This apparent contradiction has brought much speculation about the significance and understanding of colour in ancient Greece. Keeping with the motif of colour, track titles on the album are based on references from contemporary artists and their insights on colour, form and implied meaning.

The album represents a shift for Bissonnette’s work, moving from an exclusively synth-based series of explorations to a hybrid of electronic and acoustic methods. The result is a rolling and slow-moving tide of tones and undulations. The textures are in some passages soft and mollifying but fluently shift to moments of tension and unease. The Wine Dark Sea is an aural allegory to sound and colour and our tenuous understanding of abstract meaning.
