Rippling (naviarhaiku507)

Still und leise (silent and quiet) is a common phrase in German. I went from quiet to silent by reducing notes and timbre.

Not much more to say as my final approach was rather simplistic after working on a much more (=too) complicated version that ended up neither silent nor quiet (think Merzbow). I wish everyone a lovely quiet Sunday! (Or if you prefer, a hectic one - may everyone’s wildest dream come true today!)

Disquiet0616 - Still und leise

This week's assignment was to think of two words in any single language of your choosing that mean “quiet.” For example, in English you might choose from “quiet,” “silence,” “hush,” and “tranquil,” among others. I chose two Scottish Gaelic words for quiet: sàmhchair (which can also mean peacefulness or tranquility) and sàmhach (which can also mean dormant).

We were then asked to think of the "nuanced differences" of the word, and then render this into music.

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0616 discussion thread:

Chose to work with the words "calm" and "placid".

Created in Ableton Live using Fors Chiral and Slate+Ash Choreographs with Strymon Big Sky and Aqusmatiq Dedalus Delay for effects. Not sure whether I'm 100% satisfied with the result since I had a more quiet and subtle ambient vibe in mind when I started. Maybe I’ll re-visit this sometime in the future.

picked a Tascam recording from a quick palette noodle from earlier this month - some arrangement in live, added an older field recording for ambience + recorded some noisee plucks from my eurorack system

disquiet0621 - departure

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0627: Audio Journal 2023

I remembered I had fun with this project last year, and enjoyed participating again this year.

Ended up using the same ice recording I made for last year’s project.  This time, I sampled it into Slate+Ash Cycles and created two tracks – one using the Loops engine and the other the Grains engine. Layered two additional tracks using Choreographs. No other effects were used except what were in the plugins. Created and mastered in Ableton Live using iZotope Ozone 11 and FabFilter Pro L-2 Limiter. Photo by Andrea Leopardi via Unsplash.

Takahama Kyoshi was a Japanese poet active during the Shōwa period of Japan. He was the editor of the haiku magazine Hototogisu (previously edited by Shiki), where he promoted a more traditional style of haiku, as opposed to other popular schools which did not follow the pattern of seventeen syllables at that time.

Kyoshi also highlighted the symbolic function of the kigo (the seasonal reference), even though the more modern trends were already tending towards seasonless haiku.
