Like Santoka and Seisensui, Kawahigashi Hekigoto (1873-1937) was an important advocate of the free verse haiku.
Besides being a writer and critic of haiku, Hekigoto was a literary scholar, noh dancer, art critic, calligrapher, social commentator, and mountain climber.

The Assignment: Let the beginning of a book help you begin a new piece of music. 

The chosen text is a poem by Giuseppe Ungaretti (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Ungaretti),
written in July 1918 in the trenches during the First World War.

陽炎
稲妻
水の月
追い求めて
追いつめても
わたしの手を逃れて
遠くの空の薄明り

Shimmer.
Lightning.
The moon reflected in the water.
I pursue them, but as soon as I think I have them, they slip through my hands and run away. And they glow faintly in the distant sky.

Korg monotron with loop pedal and tape delay (in that order). Added some strings and brass afterwards.

Created using Voltage Modular and a lot of crickets from freesound. 

The synth elements are quite minimal and all driven semi-randomly, there's a fair amount of subtle random modulation built into each element so the final track, while a live take was mostly a mix with only a few other controls.

All the cricket samples were CC0, I'll add attribution and links when I work out which ones I actually used. :)
