Halcyon

Lazy Hunter are back on 23rd June 2023 with their new single Ritual. The song and its accompanying artwork were chosen by fans on the band's social media channels.

In contrast to their usual off-kilter style, Ritual is a straight up indie rock banger. Ever the experimentalists, the song started with salvaged drum tracks from an early recording the brothers made together in 2014. Revisiting it almost a decade later gave a new perspective and breathed new life into the song. Frontman Chris Gibson shares his thoughts:

"Ritual is one of those songs that sounds like a love song but isn't… It's actually about the concept of success. We are all conditioned to continuously strive for more money, more possessions, better jobs, accolades - as if, once we achieve it, we will finally find happiness. But it's a mirage: once one goal is reached, it dissipates, another appearing in its wake. Work, eat, sleep, repeat. So I guess the song is about my own personal relationship with the idea of success.”

Lazy Hunter continue to work on their album, intentionally taking their time. In a world of instant gratification, their aim is to allow as much time as needed for the body of work to come together organically.

Ritual

Chris and his brother Pete Gibson formed Lazy Hunter precisely to escape the rules which normally govern what indie artists should and shouldn't do. The resulting music recalls alt rock elder statesmen Radiohead and Talking Heads - wilfully bizarre, with melodic sensibility.

"We had been chasing success for a long time," says frontman Chris. Stints in previous bands yielded sporadic victories - a national radio spot here, a television placement there - but they never quite achieved the elusive breakthrough moment. "It was exhausting, we were constantly second-guessing everything, and it was affecting the music." So, burnt out and bored, the duo formed a band with no rules whatsoever: "you want a song with a jazz beat in 13/8 time? Great! There's no-one here to tell us 'no, you can't do that'."

From 2019 to 2021, they knuckled down to write. Gradually building a vault of off-kilter prog-inspired art rock, they quietly released two EPs - paradise and antisocial - in 2021. This was swiftly followed by mini-album Fast Track to the Peach Blossom Spring in 2022, the lead singles of which were positively reviewed in the blogosphere and caught the attention of BBC Introducing in Sheffield.

Now, they are stepping up a gear - taking on the challenge of independently writing, recording and releasing a full-length album in 2023. As paradoxical as ever, they plan to openly share the making of the album throughout the year, allowing fans to see how it's made, whilst also constructing a surreal, obtuse, AI-generated visual world for it to exist in, simultaneously exposing and concealing themselves. It's this penchant for paradox, along with their fearless musicality, that makes Lazy Hunter one of the most interesting alt rock artists in the UK underground scene right now.

The first offering from their album, 'I Want to Save the World but I Don't Know How', will be released on 03 February 2023.
