Melatonin /with Ireen Amnes

Sydney and Munich based duo Pinz & Pelz first met in Melbourne 2018 and have since gone on to release stellar projects exploring everything from deep chugging delights to blissed out breaks and house. Now the unique pairing make their debut on the Lobster Theremin affiliated 1Ø Pills Mate, delving further into the darker side of dance music. 

Opening track ‘Now In The Ether’ sets the pace; as the duo's affiliation for rave combined with a shadowy backdrop of low-slung percussion make for a whirlwind of kinetic dance-floor energy. ‘Minotaur’ closely follows suit with another heavy dose of time-less techno. This time the track's interlude adds a new element entirely, as atmospherics flirt with electro before being transported front-left once again. 

‘Superposition’ mixes powerful percussion with a blend of squelchy 303s and alien electronics, seemingly signalling to a far away galaxy, before ‘When We Are Entwined’ closes the curtain with a hypnotic heads-down banger with a psychoactive twist.

Joining the VA is House of (S)PUNK founder and label head @la-fraicheur (she/her), with “Processing” an eerie gloomy trip through grieving times and the complexity of the feelings living in those parts. Like making your way through a dark muggy dense jungle with therapy as your machete, La Fraicheur creates a complex landscape where sinister howls, creepy rasping of crouched predators and menacing sound designs like a fluttering flock of angry bats battle melancholic loving reminiscence and flimsy fragile pings of hopes, like dying ambers. "Processing" is the emotional techno reminder of the need to relentless move forward, as the only way out is through.

Daniel Fisher, AKA Physical Therapy, is an artist of many faces. Bouncing from techno to jungle, IDM to disco— often under the moniker Physical Therapy, elsewhere as house duo Fatherhood, and sometimes under a slew of untold aliases — his catalogue can be a confounding proposition to decode.

But no longer. "It Takes A Village: The Sounds Of Physical Therapy" contains 11 unreleased tracks from 9 different aliases and collaborations, and is the definitive primer for the sly producer and DJ's enigmatic work. 

Across Village’s two discs, we see Fisher explore the seams and folds of electronic music's various sub-genres. On disc 1, we get jazz-inflected breakbeat science from Jungle Jerry and bass rumbling instrumental hip-hop from Green Buddha. The irascible pairing of Kirk the Flirt & Peter Pressure offer one of their signature disco-edits. "Ya Carrying" a collaboration with Michael Magnan as Fatherhood, imagines classic house through a digi-dub prism.

On disc 2, Fisher flexes his techno muscles. Proto-hardstep by Physical Therapy, psychedelic bongo driven techno by Buckaroo!, pumping electro fusion by DJ Overnite, and deep warehouse soul by Stefan Proper. The compilation ends with an ambient cleanse by Fisher’s "no kick drums allowed" project, Car Culture.

Although rhythmic and dance floor worthy, this track’s primary form takes on the immersion of a Transcendental Meditation. With a driving mantra present throughout, it works through different pockets of your mind; surfacing, making sense of and setting free buried thoughts, while always returning to the propulsive sedation of this motif.

Since debuting modestly in 2014 under the alias Kaboko, Lazy Pluto has juggled a diverse array of inspirations, including early-’80s funk and electro, art rock, raw and classicist house, and Dubstep, while putting a fresh spin on the forms to decayed, disorienting effect.

“Ambient music is something that can be used as a tool, I’ll often use ambient music for meditative purposes, you can create such an interesting emotional sensation with this genre, it’s beautiful and relatively unexplored.”
