 It began as an earworm - a melody I could not get out of my head from the Bulgarian folk song Dragano Draganke. I thought it would be interesting to creatively describe the process of trying to forget the melody. Reel-to-reel tape and washes of microcassette noise shape a tapestry of layered and speed-shifted flute sounds. Made in New York City, 2015.

Double Bass Crossfade positions two double bassists at opposite corners of the Knockdown Center’s 50,000 square foot main room. The instruments are wirelessly amplified, allowing the performers to slowly move across the room over the course of 40 minutes, meeting in the center and then crossing to each other's original starting positions. A 10-channel sound system is creatively installed in the space. As the performers change their position, the sounds they play will be dynamically routed from speaker to speaker according to their location, creating in their wake a mutable, engulfing sound-field. Site-specific composition developed the acoustics of Silo City's Marine A grain elevator in Buffalo, NY. Composition by Lea Bertucci. Performed by Lea Bertucci, Steve Baczkowski, Bill Sacks and Kyle Ohlsen. This project was developed as part of Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center's Workspace Residency.

Acoustic Shadows - brass (Excerpt)

Commissioned by the American Composers' Forum and written for Tigue Percussion, 2019. Premiered 1/24/19 at The Kitchen, NYC.

Mass of Dissolution is a new work commissioned by the American Composers' Forum and written specially for the percussion trio Tigue. The piece is conceived of as an incantation against the blind violence of military-industrial power that dominates global dynamics. Combining extended techniques for percussion with dislocated fragments of traditional American drum corps music, this work takes an intense and abstract approach to contemporary percussion music. With an array of percussion instruments, from tympani to triangle, to random metal objects, these instruments are used to evoke the sound of helicopters, engines, and alarms – all industrial tools used in modern warfare. Direct musical references to military percussion repertoire taken from Wilcoxen's All American Drummer become a machine so tightly wound that eventually the apparatus seizes and violently disassembles itself.
