Phonica dives into a new era, or season if you will, of our long established mix series after a stomping 100th mix from London legend Erol Alkan. 
We jump into our 101st mix from one of our most recent Phonica releasee's; French born and Swiss based DJ & producer Lea Lisa. If you some how managed to miss Lea's most recent outing with us we highly recommend it. Taking inspiration from legend Mark Goddard's (aka The Truth) classic "The End", Lea's "Love To The End" is her own various takes on this 1992 UK gem!  And thus is what we see in Phonica mix 101, a crossing of time, styles and blends. Passing through elements of deep, cosmic, tech and jacking styles of house Lea Lisa shows that she shares the divine skills of legends like Kerri Chandler and Ron Trent. We have a quick chat with Lea about her recent projects and to see what she has in store for the future.

It's always very touching to find musical testimonials. Over 20 years ago, my booking agency asked me to record this mix. In 2002, I was very inspired by the San Francisco scene. There were some great labels, DJs and artists there... What makes me happy is that I could still play 95% of those records. Time goes by too quickly, but I'm still as passionate and involved as ever. It was a great period, we played 100% vinyl, I scoured the record shops... This mix is an opportunity to look back on a past with tons of great memories. Favorite recordings and Lea Lisa present Many Shades of House, a personal selection of House music tracks that have a very special place in Lea Lisa‘s heart and in her record box. Amongst this selection, Many Shades Of House is including many very rare and hard to find titles, mostly never reissued on vinyl until now.

Lea Lisa (Phonica Records, Wolf Music…) is a DJ, producer & vinyl addict who never stops digging and hasn’t since she first started in 1995. House music is so rich and varied that she naturally felt the desire to show and share this diversity. “Through this compilation I wanted to present artists and records that have greatly influenced me throughout my career. Whether through the strong messages they convey or through the emotions I felt discovering each of these vinyl.” said Lea Lisa.

Carefully packed with long-forgotten US house gems (Transient’s groove keeper “Higher” and a 1997 NYC House tune from Kerri Chandler in his garage house days), iconic early house/techno treasure (Mark Goddard‘s “Truth”), intensive journeys (Passion Dance Orchestra) to atmospheric soundscapes (Pure Science), soulful grooves (Ron Trent‘s boogie infused “Can’t Change Me”) and timeless deep house gems (Slowhouse, Abacus).

Created in 2005, Favorite Recordings presents a rich catalogue combining the productions of new artists with reissues of forgotten masterpieces all along the wide groove music spectrum, from Soul/Funk, Jazz, Disco, to Reggae, Hip-Hop, House or Electronic genres. Before launching Favorite. Pascal Rioux, founder and label honcho, started in the mid-90s with the House music label Rotax Disques. In 2014, following his meeting and affinity with French House DJ Jeremy Underground, they quickly collaborated on a series of compilations (My Love Is Underground) curated by Jeremy and reissuing some of his finest Underground House music hidden gems. Today the story starts again with Lea Lisa with this finest compilation for House Music Lovers…

Sometimes something comes along that is so special and will be a welcome embellishment to any discerning house DJ’s record bag. Sadly, not for the stick, as this remains true to the heritage of the music and is a vinyl only release.

A double vinyl gatefold album has been carefully curated, housing Lea Lisa’s memories of the best of her house sets from luminaries like Kerri Chandler to Lars Bartkuhn, to Mark Goddard, and Ron Trent.

Housed on French label Favorite Recordings- which is headed up by Pascal Rioux, the label synonymous with Jeremy Underground and his comp series: My Love is Underground - Many Shades of House is lovingly put together by Lea Lisa who has been about on the French underground scene for over twenty years. This compilation brings Lea Lisa to the fore with this excellent, chunky, sure-fire selection of four to the floor classic house treasures.

Last week, a friend who used to manage my website over 20 years ago found a mix in his archives. It dates back to 2001. It’s always very special for me to go delve into my memories. To find out what music I was playing at that time. I was 26, and I had already found my identity in the way I mixed and how to tell a story with my vinyl.
For those of you who used to be djs or house music lovers, I’m sure this mix will bring back fond memories of underground house music 🪩(ヅ)

Following well-regarded outings on Phonica Records and Wolf Music and a superb Many Shades Of House compilation released this year, the Lausanne-based artist echoes Laurent Garnier or Joaquin Claussell with a naturalistic take on jazzy, live-intoned house and breakbeat, working with a throng of session musicians to produce this much-sought but difficult-to-nail feeling.

Following well-regarded outings on Phonica Records and Wolf Music, and a superb "Many Shades Of House" compilation released this year, Lausanne-based Lea Lisa joins Smallville Records this June with ‘Poem For The Lost Souls’, accompanied by remixes from Kuniyuki and Session Victim as a special Double-12“ package.

For these tracks, Lea Lisa has worked with several musicians in the studio to transform the warmth and organic feel of real instruments into her musical universe. The original mix of ‘Poem For The Lost Souls’ leads, a jazzy house journey that ebbs and flows through fluttering flute melodies, ethereal chords, wandering piano and funk-infused bass grooves running atop organic percussion and disco tinged drums. On the B Side, the ‘Broken Mix’ follows, as the name would suggest, rhythmically shifting focus towards off-kilter drum breaks alongside the other melodies and again - all the ingredients that make a classic house track.

Opening the C-side on record 2, acclaimed Japanese artist and Mule Musiq regular Kuniyuki steps up to rework ‘Poem For The Lost Souls’, in typical fashion the Sapporo born producer extracts the core grooves from the original and shapes it into something uniquely his own, laden with warmth, soul and dynamics. The duo Session Victim then round out the release on Side D with their interpretation, fusing together the original synth melodies with their own amalgamation of intricately intertwined keys and atmospherics, underpinned by a shuffled rhythm section and bouncy low-end drive.

It’s coming with a gatefold cover-artwork by Stefan Marx for a cherry-blossom glimpse of Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

Consistently flying the flag for House Music for over 20 years, Lea Lisa is one of those understated DJs responsible for pushing the sound, regardless of electronic trends. A mainstay through her residencies and integral involvement in respected record store Innerdisc, Lea has been cultivating her production skills for some time behind the scenes, until now.
A long time friend of label boss Nick V, playing each other's parties back in 2004, Mona Musique presents Walking La Mona Ep.
Inspired by the work of her mentors Kerri Chandler and Larry Heard, Imagine That is classic House; simple, effective but above all emotive. Complimented by the haunting deep tones of Rich Medina, his conscious spoken words echo discontentment around the current political climate.
On the flip side Lea reminisces of the early 90s with a revived spirit on Intention. Certainly one for the dancefloor, it is Lea Lisa’s subtle production work in the beats, synths and organs that make the difference here...
